BWC Reinstates Safety Council Incentive for Group Rated Employers

On June 16, 2011 the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) Board of Directors voted to expand the Safety Council Incentive program to include group rated program participants.

Through the Safety Council program employers earn rebates on their workers' compensation premiums by participating in their local safety council and reducing the frequency of workplace injuries.  Participating employers receive a 2 percent rebate for attending safety council programs and an additional 2 percent may be earned for demonstrating a reduction in the frequency and/or severity of workplace incidents.

Beginning July 1, 2011, the Safety Council program has been expanded.  Now those employers participating in the group rating program are also able to participate in the Safety Council program and earn the 2 percent performance rebate.  By reducing the frequency and/or severity of incidents, group rated companies can earn the 2 percent performance rebate in addition to their employer's group rating discount.

If your company could benefit from participating in a safety council, consider the CAK Safety Council sponsored by the Green Chamber of Commerce.  The CAK Safety Council meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month at the Hampton Inn on Arlington Ridge East (behind Bob Evans).  Registration and breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m. and the program runs from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.  To qualify for the incentive program this year, you must complete the enrollment form and return it to the Green Chamber before August 19, 2011. Contact the Green Chamber at 330.896.3023 for more information.

Growing Businesses in Green

Kovatch CastingsWhile we all know the economy has been rough for a lot of businesses, we are always excited when some of our own have overcome these odds and grown.  In July, two Green businesses celebrated their successful expansions.

Kovatch Castings recently completed a 15,400 square foot expansion.  Kovatch's expansion is also unique because of its energy efficiency - they are able to capture and reuse heat generated from its new furnaces.  The new expansion also allows Kovatch to hire additional workers. This also marks a special milestone for Kovatch - 35 years in business.  Congratulations!

Frito-Lay expanded its facility in Green by adding on 22,000 square feet to its facility on East Turkeyfoot Lake Road, allowing them to hire an additional 22 staff members.  To read more about their expansion, click here.

Green Initiative
As Kermit the Frog once said, "It's not easy being green."  Little did we know what insight a frog had.  Being green isn't just a fad, but many businesses have seen a benefit to being green - more black in their bottom line.  Today, the movement takes a more holistic approach - people, planet, profit.  Tell us what you or your company does to be green and we will share your ideas in a future edition of Business Matters.  Ideas can be shared with Sarah Haring at sharing@cityofgreen.org.
