Linking Literacy Learning to Nature and the Outdoors (K to 8)

Bring the vibrancy of the real world to the essential tasks of developing literacy and numeracy skills. This 2-day workshop will explore how to engage students by using the built, cultural and natural environments right outside the school doors!
Teachers will gain: * Skills to address the challenges of taking your class outdoors to learn * Experience in identifying the natural phenomena and biodiversity in most schoolyards and neighbourhoods throughout the year * Identification and application of key learning strategies such as inquiry, integration, acting on learning, and making real world connections to create meaningful learning experiences that address curriculum expectations. Outdoor Environmental Education AQ Course
Final date to register: Monday June 11th.
Begins July 3. Total of 18 course modules, to be completed by July 23-24. Final assignment due July 30th.
July 6th-8th Mandatory residential retreat: Norval Outdoor Education Centre in Georgetown. You will complete 5 of the 18 modules in these 3 days.
This course is taught by a master in the field. It will focus on how classroom teachers can use the unique features of outdoor environmental education to engage students and help them integrate their learning. All grades. It is approved by the Ontario College of Teachers.
Course developer and instructor is Grant Linney, a career outdoor and environmental educator. Mark Whitcombe, former Program Coordinator of Outdoor Education for the Toronto District School Board will be part of the Norval residential retreat.
