Keep an Eye on the Harbor During the Winter with Our Updates

Message From M.O.M.

Sad to say but the 2010 boating season is quickly coming to a close. Service is now focused on winterizing engines and preparing boats for winter storage. Below you will find some information about these services.  Our rates for winter services remain at 2008 levels and our entire rate sheet is available online. If you are thinking about repowering before next season, consider taking advantage of our special pricing on rigging a new engine (see coupon below).

MOM, John Lusty, Grilling up a Storm at Customer Appreciation Bar B-Q
M.O.M. in the "Galley" Grilling up a Storm at Our Annual Customer Appreciation Bar B-Q.

With the wonderful weather which ran through most of the Memorial Day to Columbus Day period, there was a lot of great boating to be had in 2010. Our customers reported many days of fabulous conditions and a lot of hours were added to outboard engines this year. At the marina we continued to make improvements to facilities including dock upgrades, shop building improvements, and a new ramp to the Main Dock from the deck. We have continued our efforts to think greener and are taking steps to incorporate bottom wash water collection and filtering into our activities. The closing of the York River Bridge was not an experience we want to have happen for at least another 50 years, but as mentioned in the bridge update article below, getting around the area next summer should be much better.

To all our customers, thank you for a great 2010 season.

--John Lusty, Marina Operations Manager (M.O.M.)

2011 Boston Whalers Are Arriving
The 2011 Boston Whalers have started to arrive. New Montauks, Super Sports, and Dauntless' are already here; so come on down and take a look. If you would like to have the full line Whaler 2011 catalog delivered to your door, request a Boston Whaler catalog at whaler.com.

170 Whaler Super SportHighlighting the 2011 model year is the new 170 Super Sport. The 170 is a big 17-footer that is as versatile, customizable and unsinkable as they come. Our first 170 is scheduled to arrive in early October. The standard boat is expertly rigged for fun and functionality with upscale features and room for seven people. You can also pick from a long list of enticing options to make the boat all your own. Options include a bucket sport seat, carry-on livewell, poling platform, wakeboard rack, colored hull wrap and more. A great boat to get the fun started.

Whether you are in the market to buy or sell a boat, give YHMS a call.  Contact John on extension 11.
boat with portable fuel tanks Storing Portable Fuel Tanks
If you have portable gas tanks, we recommend you empty them before storing your boat for the winter or bringing it to us for storage. Pour the gas into the tank of your car or truck or snow blower, where it will be burned much sooner.  If you just let it sit all winter, it will likely be unusable next boating season because of separation caused by moisture in the ethanol blend. If bringing your boat to us for storage and tanks are not empty, we will empty them for you but there will be a fee to cover our hazardous materials handling costs.

Route 103 Bridge Update
According to the lastest information from Maine DOT resident engineer, John Auger, the new Route 103 bridge over the York River should be complete in November with a scheduled opening on the 22nd. That's good news for all of us who have missed being able to cross over to Harris Island from Route 1A for more than a year.  What some of you may have forgotten, however, is that there is a second phase to this project. The next phase involves replacing two bridge sections along the stretch of Route 103 between the York River Bridge and the Seabury Rd/Brave Boat Harbor Rd intersection.
Next Phase Bridge Repair

These smaller bridges are designated as Stations 34 and 44 by MDOTand indicated on the map at right. This work will begin during the winter following the opening of the main bridge and continue into May 2011. If all goes as scheduled, the entire stretch of Route 103 from Seabury to 1A, should be open by Memorial Day next year.

It may be of interest to some of you that a new technology for bridge building is being used on both the main bridge and the smaller Station 44 bridge. The projects are using a new prestressed concrete bridge beam fabricated in Vermont which is touted as a way to expedite the replacement of existing bridges and is being used for the first time in New England on the York River Bridge. If you would like to learn more about the construction of the bridge, we have provided some links below:

After another successful selling season, our sales manager, David Stevenson, left YHMS at the end of September.  David plans to devote more time to his healthcare position at Portsmouth Hospital and to other opportunities in the marine business. We thank David for both his passionate and professional management of our sales department for the past five years. During his time with YHMS, David earned several Boston Whaler sales awards. We are grateful for his time with us and the high level of service he gave to our sales customers.

Wintering Well
The key to preparing your boat for next year's boating season is protecting it from winter's harsh weather. In the northeast, this includes removing your boat from the water for on-land storage, covering the boat, and winterizing the engine. YHMS can provide you with all of these services.  We can winterize most engine types, provide storage for sail and power boats, and can install shrink-wrap cover.

Honda MotorEngine Winterization Services
We can winterize most makes and models of outboard engine. The table below shows the fixed labor charge for outboard engine winterizations at YHMS. Parts and materials are extra. We also winterize I/Os and Inboards. For descriptions and rates on these and other services, download the complete YHMS Storage Services and General Labor Rates brochure from our website (PDF format).

Boat with Shrink WrapCovering and Storing Your Boat for the Winter
The main reason to cover your boat prior to winter storage is to keep out the rain and snow. Water can accumulate under rail fittings, hatches, hinges, rub rails, etc. When the weather drops below freezing, ice can form that may break or loosen them enough to create one or more leaks in the boat. Covering your cleaned boat will keep it clean and protected from the harsh elements of Mother Nature including sun fading. We recommend covering your boat as soon as possible to protect your investment during the off season.

Tree Down in YHMS Storage Yard
This photo illustrates why it is a good idea to have boat insurance that covers your investment year round.
A Reminder: Year Round Boat Insurance
All boat owners in New England should have boat insurance that is in effect throughout the year - not just for those months when your boat is in the water. Progressive Insurance reports that nearly 20% of claims in northern states are made during the period from labor day to memorial day - the boating off season. According to the Insurance Information Institute most [but not all] companies provide limited coverage for property damage only for small boats such as canoes and small sail and power boats (<25hp) under a homeowners or renters insurance policy. Coverage is usually limited and liability coverage is typically not included.  Larger and faster boats require a separate boat insurance policy. If you do not have boat insurance or are unsure about your coverage, call your insurance agent. As with most boatyards and marinas, YHMS has a long-standing policy that states "Insurance coverage is the responsibility of the boat owner. YHMS assumes no responsibility for loss, theft or damage." This applies to boats on the docks, in storage, or here for repairs.

Summer 2011 Slip and Rack Openings
YHMS offers both slip and valet rack service dockage plans. Our annual dockage plans begin in October with winter storage and continue through the summer boating season in 2011. Summer only plans are also available. Our 2010 dockage season finishes at the end of October. Current dockage customers must confirm to us their intent to return by November 1st, after which we will know how many slips (and of what size) and rack spaces will be open for next year. Securing a spot this fall means you can opt for an annual plan which include winter cover and storage at our package rates. If you would like more information about our slip and rack services, visit yorkharbormarine.com/dockage.
