| A Message From M.O.M.
With the 2009 boating season winding down, now is the time to make plans for the off season storage of your boat. Proper winterizing is important to ensure a trouble free start to next year's boating season. We hope you will choose us for your winterization and storage needs. YHMS technicians are factory trained to repair and service most engines. We incorporate these factory standards when decommissioning other systems on your boat including generators, fresh and salt water systems, air conditioning units, etc. Don't forget your winter cover--shrink wrap service is also available.
Now is also a good time to consider what improvements you want to make before next year. These can be taken care of best in the off season when service personnel have extra time rather than in the spring when service schedules quickly back-up. If you schedule your upgrades and repairs for completion between December and March, we offer a 10% discount on parts and labor (note that this offer does not apply to winterization services).
This issue of "Dock Talk" includes information about our winterization and storage services. We also offer our recommendations regarding ethanol gasoline and winter storage. You will also find some great pictures sent to us from one of our customers, Ned Thomas.
On a personal note, I would also like to invite those of you who live locally to participate in a fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 26 for local lobsterman and York volunteer firefighter, Gardner Marshall. After sustaining a serious injury fighting a fire in January 2008, medical bills and limited ability to work have greatly affected his family. His friends and local businesses are holding the fundraiser at Lobster in the Rough on Route 1 from Noon onwards. More information can be found below.

To Top Off or Not to Top Off, That is the Question
It's been nearly twelve months since E-10 gasoline was introduced in Maine. We've learned a lot about this additive and the best way to combat the effects of 10% alcohol in your gas. Two facts are clear about ethanol: 1) it is a cleaning agent, the gas will peel away "varnish" and resins that may have built up over time in the gas lines and tank and send them into your engine's carburetors; and 2) ethanol absorbs water which over time will cause the ethanol and water to separate from the gasoline. It draws moisture from the air through leaky gas caps, fuel overflow vents and from just operating in the marine environment. We've talked to fuel suppliers, engine manufacturers, and other industry professionals and found that informed opinions vary all over the map on what should be done to minimize the unwanted side effects of E-10. From this research and discussion, we've developed some general guidelines for winterization this year. If you have portable gas tanks: Empty them (or we can empty it for you). Pour the gas into the tank of your car or truck, where it will be burned much sooner. If you just let it sit all winter, it will likely be unusable next boating season. For inboard tanks: We will fill the inboard tanks with fresh gas to approximately 95% of capacity and use an additive to minimize the amount and effects of the moisture that will condense in the tank during storage. For gas engines we will use the same StarTron® Enzyme Fuel Treatment that we've been recommending all summer to those who do not fill up exclusively with the ValvTect® gasoline we sell. For diesel engines we will use StarTron® Enzyme Diesel Treatment to minimize the growth of bacteria in the tank. In addition, we will add ValvTect® stabilizer to the gasoline and diesel fuel for the winter to keep it fresh and to slow corrosion in the tank.
At the marina we are constantly struggling with the complex issues surrounding ethanol gas and boats. It should be noted that we believe the measures we are taking are good, proactive steps to fight against ethanol's effects during winter storage. We can not, however, rule out possible gas related issues in your spring start ups. |

Covering and Storing Your Boat for the Winter
There are many reasons to cover your boat prior to winter storage. The principle reason is to keep out the rain and snow. Water can accumulate under rail fittings, hatches, hinges, rub rails and the like. When the weather drops below freezing the ice that forms may break or loosen them enough to create one or more leaks in the boat. Also by covering your cleaned boat it will remain clean and protected from the harsh elements of Mother Nature including sun fading. We recommend always covering your boat as soon as possible to protect your investment during the off season.

Summer 2010 Slip and Rack Openings Update
If you are looking for a home base for your boat, YHMS currently has a few openings for 2010 in our valet rack service for boats up to 25 feet. At present we also have a few slips for smaller vessels (under 20 feet LOA). If you sign up for one of our current openings, you can opt for our annual plan which includes winter cover and storage at our package rates. Our 2009 dockage season finishes at the end of October. In early November, after all of our current customers confirm their intent to return or not, we will know if there will be additional slips open for next year. If you would like more information about our slip and rack services, visit our website at www.yorkharbormarine.com/dockage. | |
