Torah Portion October 13, 2012
| Bereshit (Genesis 1:1-6:8)
The Torah begins with the familiar but complex story of creation. God creates the world and its inhabitants in six days and rests on the seventh day. Adam and Eve inhabit the Garden of Eden until they are tempted by the serpent and banished. Abel's offering is accepted over his brother Cain's, and Cain slays Abel.

| |
Dear Friends,
The excitement is about to unfold, literally, as we fully unravel the Torah and join for a virtual tour! Come celebrate as we conclude the final reading of the Book of Deuteronomy and immediately turn to the initial passage of Genesis. Our festivities will be enhanced with the beautiful ceremony of Consecration, as the newest learners of our religious school will be called to the bima! Once again - this will be a happening GRS event, for kids of all ages and the young at heart!
Chag Sameach,
Rabbi Andy

GRS Architectural Search and Design Working Group
|
| |
Andrew Loebelson, Sandy Soule, and Helen Stark invite you to become members of the GRS Architect Selection Working Group, which will be undertaking the exciting and challenging job of finding the architects who will design the new home of GRS. We'd love to have you on board, but do want to give you a preview of what will be involved:
1. We'll meeting often, between two and four times a month -- maybe a bit more at the beginning, perhaps a bit less at other times. Our first meeting will held at 12 noon on Tuesday, October 30 at the home of Sandy Soule. 2. We'll also be visiting area synagogues, churches, and schools, to see first-hand the work of architects we're considering, and will also be making phone calls to check references. We'll be seeing several more area congregations before our first meeting; let us know if you'd like to join us.
3. We'll be reviewing RFP's (request for proposals) returned by the architects we're considering. 4. We'll be surveying congregants to get their feedback on aspects of synagogue design and function that they consider priorities. 5. Once an architect has been selected, it's expected that the work of the committee will segue into the actual design process, which will involve working with the architects as well as keeping the congregation informed and involved.
Although it's understood that not everyone will be able to attend every meeting, working group members need to be able to attend a majority of meetings. At our first meeting we'll try to set dates/times that work best for most people; if you can't attend our first meeting, please let us know your scheduling needs.

Meet our new Israeli Emmisaries
|
| |
Ayelet Ofir from Kibbutz Ein-Dor is an enthusiastic 18 year-old from Kibbutz Ein-Dor, which is in located in the Lower Galilee region of Northern Israel. Her favorite classes in school are literature and theater, and she has been very involved in her high school's theater productions. She also loves volleyball and aerobics, and traveling with her family and friends. She has experience as a youth coordinator for the "Shomer Hatzair" movement for 2 years, in which she led and traveled with a group of 25 10-12 year olds, which she really enjoyed. Ayelet is very excited about coming to Greenwich Connecticut, and becoming a part of the community. She is looking forward to having a great experience, and can't wait to meet people in the Greenwich community. She is excited to learn more about American Jewish culture, especially in Connecticut, and to share her experiences as an Israeli Kibbutznik with the people she meets.
Itamar Wilf from Bet Lehem Hagelilit is 18 years old, and lives on Moshav Bet Lehem Hagelilit, which is located in Northern Israel. Itamar's favorite subject in school is Physics, and his hobbies include Scuba diving and playing soccer and basketball with his friends. On his moshav, he has worked in the greenhouse and as an agricultural tour guide in the cow shed. Itamar has been actively involved in the Bnai Hamoshavim youth group as both a participant and a counselor for both the 4th-5th grade and 8th grade groups. He very much enjoys working with younger kids and leading fun and enriching activities, which he can't wait to do in the Greenwich community. Itamar has been to the United States before as part of a summer camp in Michigan through the Jewish Agency. He feels very strongly about contributing to the Jewish people, both in Israel and abroad. An extension of this dedication is his decision to do a 9 year service in the IDF, as part of a special unit, when he returns to Israel from his year in Greenwich. He can't wait to meet people in the Greenwich community!
