Torah Portion August 11, 2012
| Ekev
Deuterononomy 7:12-11:25 Moses further reviews the People of Israel's experiences in the wilderness, the punishments for their failures, and the promise for their future. He teaches that God requires nothing that is beyond their reach. They only need to love and serve God, and walk in His ways. The portion concludes with the intermediary paragraph of the V'ahavta, removed from the Reform Siddur. |

A Message from Robert Birnbaum, President of GRS Board of Trustees
|
|
Answering the Call
When I was asked to become GRS Board President, one of the things Bill Grad said to me was that the congregation is energized. I've certainly found that to be the case. People are working hard and effectively on our standing committees, getting the school ready for opening and a successful year, for example, or preparing the High Holy Day services and celebrations in September. An outstanding group of individuals has completed the work to find and secure our "bridge" sites. (Details can be found at http://grs.org/presidents-blog/presidents-blog/). And of course the focus remains intense on finding a site for our permanent home.
Two weeks ago, this column focused on some new and vital projects. The call has been answered for one of them. Nancy Korobkin and George Toper have volunteered to handle the Portable Ark project. It's actually evolved in a broader Interior Design project, encompassing how we should decorate our temporary sites at Round Hill Community Church and First Congregational Church, as well as the Ark and other ritual objects. The group that deals with this project will have a key role when we get to design issues for the new building. If you are interested in joining the group, email Nancy at korobkin@optonline.net.
GRS could not function without volunteers like Nancy and George. And in a time of rapid change like this the efforts of an individual can have a significant and lasting impact. So, don't be shy! You will find that the work you do really matters. To review some of the projects previously mentioned, click http://grs.org/presidents-blog/be-an-impact-player/. Or, contact me at robertdbirnbaum@gmail.com. We'll work with you to find the role that suits you, fits your time availability, and that is important.
