Torah Portion June 30, 2012

Chukat
(Numbers 19:1-22:1)
Moses shows impatience and a lack of faith in God by striking a rock twice, miraculously producing water. God punishes Moses, telling him he will not enter the Promised Land. The deaths of Miriam and Aaron are briefly mentioned in the portion. The portion concludes with the retelling of the battles that the People of Israel faced on their journey to Canaan.

A Message from Rabbi Sklarz

True Harmony: The Beautiful Music of Young Arab and Jewish Youth from Israel
Dear Friends,
Last week, Greenwich Reform Synagogue joined with a host of other congregations in sponsoring Polyphony, a wonderful orchestra comprised of Arab and Jewish youth from Israel.
The program was beautiful, including music of Bach, Grieg and Handel, and the musicians were superb. The sense of harmony, which transcended the magnificent sound, was most powerful of all. The Polyphony Foundation "believes in the power of music to bridge the divide between Arab and Jewish communities in Israel and to serve as a model for cooperation worldwide based on cultural exchange, dialogue and partnerships." The Foundation sees this remarkable gathering of young musicians as a vehicle for promoting mutual understanding and the creation of a peaceful society. Indeed, it was so meaningful to sit amongst clergy of various faiths - Christian, Jewish and Muslim - and to have experienced the joyous sounds of these exceptional young men and women. For so many, our hearts were warmed.
L'Shalom,
Rabbi Andy
