A Message from Rabbi Sklarz
|

Yom HaShoah Commemoration at GRS Dear Friends, Please join us for our GRS Erev Shabbat - Yom HaShoah Commemoration on Friday, April 20th, at 6:30pm as members, Jim and Wendy Schreiber, speak about their spearheading of the Auschwitz Jewish Community Center. This museum, synagogue, and center for study stands on the grounds of the former concentration and death camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau, housed in the Polish town of Oswiecim where Jews had lived and thrived for over 500 years. Since the creation of the center, through Wendy's efforts, the Schreibers have instituted key programs in which select cadet and midshipmen from West Point, the Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy experience intensive Holocaust training, first in the United States and ultimately in Poland. As Jim has articulated, "Most importantly, this program coincides with major efforts at these academies to teach these young officers that if America is to be a force for good in the world, its armed forces must have a moral center." Prior to her recent passing, our GRS matriarch, Phyllis Schreiber, had made plans to sponsor the Oneg Shabbat for this evening. It would, indeed, mean a great deal to the entire Schreiber family for all to come and hear Jim and Wendy share their most compelling story. I look forward to sharing this meaningful service with you.
b'Shalom,
Rabbi Andy

Important Update on the GRS Future Building Plans
| | |
We are delighted to inform you that the contract with the Stanwich School has been signed, and all is on track for the closing on June 1, 2012. Our search teams are in full swing, both to find temporary and permanent locations for our synagogue, religious school, and the future GRS preschool. A number of options are under investigation, and although it's premature to share any details, it looks very promising. We don't want to miss any possibilities, so if you have any suggestions for a temporary space, please contact Helen Stark at 203-622-1732 or stark110@optonline.net; if you have any recommendations for purchase options, please contact Sandy Soule at 203-637-7642 or sandy.soule@gmail.com.

ADULT ED TRIP TO THE YIDDISH BOOK CENTER, AMHERST, MA Sunday, April 22, 2012
| | |
GRS Adult edu cation will host a day trip to the Yiddish Book Center, in Amherst, MA on Sunday, April 22nd. Lisa Gittleman Udi, our Director of Education, has agreed that this is an educational experience and any Sunday school child going on the trip will be given credit for attending Sunday school that day. A note to the teacher will attest to going!
The Center would not usually be open that day, and we expect there will only be one other group there. The trip is a little over 2 ½ hours from GRS. We will leave from GRS at 8:30 a.m. and arrive at the Book Center at approximately 11:00 a.m. We have also had a donation of a commercial van and driver (at no cost). Our tour will be the first order of the day. After the tour we will be able to go through the center on our own and/or have lunch at the open air market/restaurant next door. We will leave the Center between 2 and 3 pm depending on the desires of the group, arriving back at GRS before dinnertime.
The cost of admission to the Center is $8 per adult and $4 per child. Brochures of the Center are available at GRS and you may learn more at the Book Center website: www.yiddishbookcenter.org. To sign up please contact Ruth Mushkin at rmushkin@optonline.net.
