Torah Portion
March 10, 2012
Ki Tisa
(Exodus 30:11-34:35)

A great census is taken, and a half-shekel is collected for the purpose of building the Mishkan (Tabernacle).  God repeats the Laws of Shabbat and gives Moses the stone tablets inscribed by "the finger of God".  The scene of the Golden Calf follows.  Upon seeing the apostasy of the Golden Calf, Moses breaks the tablets, and the guilty are punished.  After the entire ordeal, the covenant is renewed between God and the Israelite people.

A Purim Message from Rabbi Sklarz
Friday, March 9, 6:30 pm

PURIM at GRS: A Three Ring Circus for KIDS of ALL AGES!

Dear Friends,

Purim RabbiThis Shabbat our bimah will rock as we celebrate Purim GRS style. This will indeed be a service for all ages!

With a child-friendly Megillah reading, to be acted out by a

dynamic cast of adult members, followed by a creative presentation by our enthusiastic GRS teens, a parade of costumes (prizes for all kids - and adults who come in costume), a mystery hamantash hunt, the participation of our children in the kindergarten and first grade class and B'nai Shir (our elementary school choir) 257 Stanwich Road is indeed the place to be!

I look forward to sharing this fun-filled event with all.

Don't forget to wear your costumes and bring your boxes of

pasta to blot out Haman's name (to later be donated to Neighbor to Neighbor)!

mac & cheeseShake, Rattle & Roll Groggers:  Enjoy Purim fun while helping the hungry.  We're going to use edible groggers for Purim, so bring small boxes of cereal or pasta (Kraft macaroni and cheese is perfect) to shake when the Rabbi reads Haman's name.  Afterwards, we'll donate them to help feed the hungry in our community.  Bring a few extra boxes to share in case someone else forgets!

The mitzvah of Purim continues... on Sunday, March 11, 2:00 pm join Cantor Lipton and me as we spread Purim cheer, co-sponsored by Jewish Family Service of Greenwich, with the residents of Nathaniel Witherell nursing home (70 Parsonage Road). Please let us know you will be in attendance by contacting Erin Thomas at 203-629-0018 or erin@grs.org.

I look forward to our celebrating together!

 Rabbi Andy

Special Guest Speaker,
Senator Richard Blumenthal
Sunday, March 11, 10:30 am
URJ NEW LOGOPlease join us as we welcome GRS Congregant, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut), to speak this coming Sunday morning at 10:30 am.

"Having been a member of this synagogue for many years and celebrated my children's Bar and Bat Mitzvahs here, I have seen the congregation's focus on education, activism, and giving back to the community. These values and the vibrant spirit of the Greenwich Reform Synagogue have inspired young people to be active and involved in community and public service."

The Senator will talk about his recent trip to the Middle East and also reveal what inspired him to enter the world of politics!

Senator Blumenthal served an unprecedented five terms as Connecticut's Attorney General, fighting for people against large and powerful special interests, before becoming elected to his first term as a United States Senator from Connecticut.

Prior to his position as U.S. Attorney, Senator Blumenthal also served as Administrative Assistant to U.S. Senator Abraham A. Ribicoff, aide to former U.S. Senator Daniel P. Moynihan when Moynihan was Assistant to the President of the United States, and law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun.

Senator Blumenthal graduated from Harvard College (Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude), and Yale Law School, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Law Journal. From 1970 to 1976 he served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.

Senator Blumenthal lives in Greenwich, Connecticut with his wife, Cynthia, and their four children.
