Vayishlach
(Genesis 32:4-36:43)
Jacob and Esau reunite. However, just prior to their reunion, Jacob wrestles with what is perhaps a divine entity. Following this struggle, God changes Jacob's name to Israel. The portion also includes the story of the rape of Jacob's daughter, Dinah. Later, God appears to Jacob and promises him the Land of Israel. The portion concludes with the birth of Benjamin, the death of Rachel, and the death of Isaac.

December Dilemma
Sunday, December 11, 9:30 am
| | CHANUKAH... CHRISTMAS...BOTH?
Is the "Holidays Season" a time of struggle for you and your family.
Do you wrestle with how to follow your sense of religious identity while being sensitive to those you love? Have you developed solutions which you would be willing to share?
Contemporary living has given rise to difficult questions.
While there are no "right" or "wrong" answers, Rabbi Andrew Sklarz, MSW will put on his social worker hat with his rabbinic kipah and facilitate a discussion on the December Dilemma.
Within a seminar format, GRS members and guests will be invited to air their concerns and share what has successfully worked for them.
The December Dilemma will be in lieu of Hebrew 102
this week.

A Message from Rabbi Sklarz
| | COME SHARE THE LIGHT of CHANUKAH with the RESIDENTS of GREENWICH WOODS
Dear Friends, This Shabbat as a congregational family we will share the joy of Chanukah together at GRS, and in several weeks we will formally celebrate the Festival of Lights within our homes, however, let us ever be cognizant of those who need some extra brightness in their lives. Join us this Sunday afternoon as we perform the mitzvot - the commandments of Chidur P'nai Zaken, Honoring the Elderly and Bikur Cholim, visiting the ill or infirm, at 2:00 pm, at Greenwich Woods; for those attending the GRS Graham Clarke Concert, we will leave directly from GRS, otherwise, please meet us at the entrace to Greenwich Woods (1165 King Street, Greenwich). I invite people of all ages to help us spread holiday cheer as we deliver the homemade cookies baked by our Sisterhood and gather together as Cantor Sabrina leads us all in song! I know that we will certainly bring smiles to the faces of so many, and our hearts will indeed be warmed by those we will encounter. With warm wishes to all for a joyous Chanukah,
Rabbi Andy

Avoiding False Witness: How Jews and
Christians Misunderstand Each Other
Amy-Jill Levine is co-editor of the highly acclaimed and best-selling new book The Jewish Annotated New Testament. The New York Times calls it "an unusual scholarly experiment: an edition of the Christian holy book edited entirely by Jews." In a major feature story, the New York Times wrote, "This volume is thus for anybody interested in a [New Testament] more attuned to Jewish sources." The book is thus relevant for both Jews and Christians - for Jews to better understand the majority religion in America, and for Christians who want to understand about the Jewish background of the New Testament. A self-described "Yankee Jewish feminist," Professor Levine's books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus and The Meaning of the Bible: What the Jewish Scriptures and the Christian Old Testament Can Teach Us. Her co-editor for The Jewish Annotated New Testament is Marc Z. Brettler, the Dora Golding Professor of Biblical Studies at Brandies University.

Chanukah Adult Beer Tasting Celebration
Saturday, December 17, 8:00 pm
| | |
Please join the GRS Sisterhood and GRS Brotherhood for a Hanukkah Celebration, which will feature our second annual (NOW IT"S A TRADITION!!!) Beer Tasting. The Beer Tasting, will again be led by George Toper and will include a sampling of several Holiday & Winter Brews. George will again be leading a discussion where he will present fascinating information on each of the beers.
In addition, the timing is perfect, so we will be making the event a festive Hanukkah celebration. Latkes will be served. Perhaps there will even be a dreidel or two!!!
The event is open to all adults (over age 21) in the GRS Community - members, prospective members, staff, and religious school teachers and adult children.
There is no charge for this event, though we will be accepting voluntary contributions for the Serle Mosoff Adult Education Fund.
Please RSVP by December 14 to the GRS office (203) 629-0018 or email Erin at erin@grs.org. It's important to RSVP - we wouldn't want to run out of beer (or latkes)!!!
