Vayetze

(Genesis 28:10-32:3)

Jacob dreams of a ladder to Heaven with angels ascending and descending.  Upon reaching the land of his mother's ancestry, Jacob marries Leah (by her father's deception), and then Rachel.  To these two wives and two maidservants, eleven sons and a daughter are born.  The portion concludes with Jacob's entire family journeying back to Canaan.

Happy Birthday to...

Family Shabbat Service and Pot-Luck Dinner                             Friday, December 2, 6:30 pm

Potluck DinnerPlease join us as we celebrate our Family Shabbat Service, where we'll hear our youth choir, B'nai Shir sing, and December birthdays will receive a special blessing, followed by a pot luck dinner and an Oneg Shabbat generously sponsored by Rabbi Andrew and Susan Sklarz.

Bring a main course, side dish, salad, dessert or drinks, then dine in style with your family and GRS friends.

If you would like to bring a dish, please contact Louise Salzer.

We would love it if you would sponsor an Oneg Shabbat -- perhaps in honor of a birthday, anniversary, a special event, or in celebration of Shabbat.  Just call the temple office (203-629-0018) to select a convenient date, and send us a check for $108.  No muss, no fuss, it's as easy as that!
A Message from Rabbi Sklarz

Rabbi USE THIS ONE!CHANUKAH?...CHRISTMAS?...BOTH?

Sunday, December 11, 9:30 AM

Is the "Holiday Season" a time of struggle for you and your family? Do you wrestle with how to follow your sense of religious integrity while being sensitive to those you love?  Have you developed "solutions" that you would be willing to share?

Contemporary living has given rise to difficult questions. While there are no "right" or "wrong" answers, Rabbi Andrew Sklarz, MSW, will wear his social worker hat and facilitate a discussion on the December Dilemma. Within a seminar format, GRS members and guests will be invited to air their concerns and share what has successfully worked for them.

The December Dilemma is in lieu of Hebrew 102 that day. Please RSVP to Erin Thomas at erin@grs.org.

b'Shalom,

Rabbi Andy

Avoiding False Witness: How Jews and

Christians Misunderstand Each Other

Amy-Jill Levine is co-editor of the highly acclaimed and best-selling new book The Jewish Annotated New Testament.  The New York Times calls it "an unusual scholarly experiment: an edition of the Christian holy book edited entirely by Jews." In a major feature story, the New York Times wrote, "This volume is thus for anybody interested in a [New Testament] more attuned to Jewish sources." The book is thus relevant for both Jews and Christians - for Jews to better understand the majority religion in America, and for Christians who want to understand about the Jewish background of the New Testament.    A self-described "Yankee Jewish feminist," Professor Levine's books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus and The Meaning of the Bible: What the Jewish Scriptures and the Christian Old Testament Can Teach Us.  Her co-editor for The Jewish Annotated New Testament is Marc Z. Brettler, the Dora Golding Professor of Biblical Studies at Brandies University.
