q & a

Beetle Invasion

Q: There are holes in the leaves of pretty much everything in my yard. Who in the world is doing this?

A:  We'd bet on the Beetles.  It happens every year, right about the time all of your plants have filled in beautifully and are looking really great...

japanese beetle
Japanese beetles were accidentally introduced into New Jersey (from Japan, believe it or not) sometime around 1916.  They have been making themselves right at home ever since.

How do you know if these are the bad guys? Check out the article on our website for help identifying and controlling these pests.

MGC news

Well, the day I have been dreading for some time now is rapidly approaching...

Clare is retiring.

Her last day with us will be in two (much too short) weeks.  We know many, many of you know and love Clare.  She's been a part of our "family" for more than 13 years.  She does so many things around here that no one is really sure how we'll manage without her.  But even more than missing all of the things she does to help keep this place running smoothly, we'll miss Clare's energy, enthusiasm and sense of humor.  It's impossible to replace someone like that.

Stop in and wish Clare the best!

photo contest

Since no one wanted to play last time, I'm altering the photo contest a bit. Apparently no one likes vegetables?

Anyhow, this time I'm looking for your best fish photo. Koi, goldfish, shubunkin, whatever...just send me some pics this time!

koi

The winner will receive a $25 Masterson's gift certificate. You can use it toward anything, like maybe some fancy fish food for your pretty contest winner.

Check out contest rules

and then email your submissions to me

All entries must be received by 7/21/11.

July 15, 2011
Greetings!

I have the weather conditions for East Aurora on my computer desktop and I've noticed something recently...the weather in EA has not really been much different from the weather here in San Diego.  Not many times during the year when I can say that!  I hope that you've found time to enjoy summer and spend some hours in the sunshine.

Just a few things to mention:
  • Not one single person sent me a submission for the photo contest. Sheesh.  I have extended the deadline and fully expect my inbox to be flooded with gorgeous photos. Check the contest box at the left.
  • Mick will be in EA and working at the garden center next week. Obviously this is not as exciting as it would be if I were going to be there, too...but make sure you stop in and say hi.
Enjoy your weekend!

tips & tricks

Fertilizefertilize lily

If your water lilies and lotus plants don't seem to be growing and blooming as well as they once did, regular fertilizing should perk them up.  We fertilize ours every 3-4 weeks throughout the growing season.

 Pondtabbs

Be sure to use a high quality aquatic fertilizer for the best results.  We use Pondtabbs Plus here at the nursery to produce lush green leaves and  abundant large blooms.

Water More!

So...remember waaay back in the spring when it rained every day? We didn't worry too much about watering plants then. Now, however, watering is a little more important.

It takes a much heavier rain than many of us think in order to adequately water plants. Since we have, thankfully, not had too many of these soaking rains recently, we recommend watering your landscape plants, grass, and container plants.

Check the post on our website for more information about how to water and what the benefits are.
