Rose Care

Q: Am I supposed to be pruning my roses now?

A: Roses should be pruned lightly throughout the growing season and severely in fall.  All types of roses benefit from being pruned after blooms are spent.  I typically grab my pruners and check out my roses about once a week.  I look for any flowers that are faded and dropping petals and cut these back.

As a general rule of thumb, I cut back the stem to just before the first set of 5 leaflets (see image below).  Sometimes, if there is noticeable fungal or insect damage farther down the stem, I will trim more to remove these damaged leaves.

Roses look delicate, but they can actually tolerate fairly heavy pruning.  Don't be nervous!  You'll do a more serious pruning in the fall.  We'll post tips later in the season!

Early Japanese Beetle Prevention is Easy!

 milky spore

We all know what those mean little beetles can do to the leaves of our plants when they invade during the summer months.  Did you know that it's easier to take preventative measures now than it is to try to control them later?

What's the secret? Milky Spore! Milky Spore is a natural, organic, LONG-LASTING method for treating the beetles in the larval stage.

The cool facts:

  • safe, non-toxic, and not harmful to people, animals or waterways
  • can be applied any time the ground is not frozen (preferably before grubs turn into beetles)
  • does not harm beneficial insects
  • use only a teaspoonful every four feet
  • bacteria remain active and are guaranteed for 10 years!
  • bacteria kill grubs by eating them from the inside out (this is only a cool fact if you're sick)
We have Milky Spore in stock now, and this is the perfect time to apply it to your lawn.
