Taming Tadpoles
Q: I want to buy tadpoles. Will they stay in my pond once they grow legs and turn into frogs?

A: Sure. What you need to do is buy a little froggy harness and a leash...
You'd be surprised how many people don't know we're kidding when we give this answer. Because we have a hard time being serious, we give this answer quite often.
In reality, we have no idea if they will stay in your pond or not. Chances are they will, as long as there is a place for them to live and an adequate food supply. Can we guarantee this? Nope.
We can tell you that it takes two seasons from egg to frog, and the tadpoles that we have here at the store are in various stages of development. You'll likely have a few tadpoles that will winter over in the pond each year.
We can also tell you that most ponds end up with frogs in them whether the pond owners like it or not. |

Greetings!
Time really does fly when you're having fun.
I was in East Aurora for three weeks and it seemed like it was over before I knew it. I feel very fortunate that I was able to come back and not only spend time with my family, but also to get to see so many familiar faces at the nursery. It was a real treat for me to meet lots of new people, too. It was so cool to hear, "Oh, you must be Erin. I know you from the newsletters."
Masterson's has always been a family business. Our customers, both old and new, are a part of the family. We thank you for your continued support and are grateful to you for making what we do here worth it. We are able to donate to countless local groups and service organizations each year thanks to your support!

| in the pond | | We know many of you have your ponds up and running for the season because we've seen lots of you here at the nursery! Every spring poses challenges to the pond keeper, but a really rainy one like this has its own unique set of obstacles to overcome. Water quality is a big concern. Here are a few things you should be doing now to keep your pond healthy throughout this transition to warmer weather.
To Do This Week: - keep surface run-off water from entering your pond
- monitor your pH, ammonia and nitrite regularly
- don't over feed your fish
- don't let algae blooms get out of control
- call us with any questions or concerns

Fertilize Now

Water lilies and lotus are very heavy feeders and should be fertilized regularly.
We fertilize our plants every 3-4 weeks with Plantabbs brand aquatic tablets.
If your lilies have not been performing very well, (small leaves and few flowers), regular fertilizing with a well balanced fertilized can produce great results.

I am back in my own yard in San Diego after being away for three weeks. It's amazing how fast things can grow in the Spring! I returned to some jungle-like growth that needs some serious attention. Luckily, I returned feeling inspired to get my own gardens in shape after spending so much time at the nursery admiring the beautiful things there. On my list for this weekend: new veggie garden!
To Do This Week:
- PLANT ANNUALS AND VEGGIES! - Memorial Day weekend is when we typically are free of the danger of frost and can safely set out annuals and veggie plants. Never mind about the rain and soggy soil.
- fertilize and apply weed prevention to your lawn -
- prune roses - roses are susceptible to fungal issues, and this wet weather is not helping. Be on the lookout for black spots on the leaves of your roses and prune away any infected parts. Treat with a systemic fungicide early to avoid issues.
Plant of the Week
I think I'm subconsciously featuring plants here that I can't grow in southern California. Here's another favorite that I can't have in my yard...
RHODODENDRONS

Height: 3' to 30', depending on variety, most common landscape varieties 8' - 10'
Exposure: partial shade to shade
Soil: thrive in very rich, slightly acidic (4.5 - 5.5), well-drained soil

Mulch at Masterson's
We've gotten lots of questions about the difference between the bagged mulch we sell here at Masterson's and the bagged mulch you can get at the grocery store or gas station.
It probably won't surprise you to hear that our professional grade mulches are of a higher quality. You can expect quality and consistency from one bag to the next, no giant chunks of wood, consistent color and texture, quality materials.
It might surprise you to know that our mulches are actually less expensive
Most of our bagged mulches come in 3 cubit foot bags. The other guys are selling 1.5 cu/ft and 2 cu/ft bags, at a higher cost to you per cu/ft.
Compare and save:
Tops Cedar Mulch: 2 cu/ft bag $3.62 w/bonus card = $1.81 per cu/ft
Our Cedar Mulch: 5 - 3 cu/ft bags (15 cu/ft) for $22.50 = $1.50 per cu/ft AND you earn Master Bucks points with your mulch purchase!
