STONE FOUNTAINS

These are one of my favorite things that we've gotten in this year!  These fountains are concrete, set with real stones, and make the coolest sound when water runs over them.

Available in several sizes and finishes, they're a cinch to set up and make a dramatic focal point in any garden setting.

I want one in my yard...just not sure if I can fit it in a suitcase to take home with me when I leave.

Fish Fight

Q: I already have some goldfish in my pond and want to add some koi. Will the koi eat my goldfish?

A: Nope, not if you get the fish here.  We work very hard to teach our fish good manners and make them attend lectures on sharing, being kind to others, keeping their fins to themselves...

So it's either that OR the types of fish we sell just get along naturally.  Either way, all of the fish that we have here are able to co-exist in a pond.

On occasion, a new fish will attract the attention of other fish when introduced to the pond.  Often, this is due to the new fish dropping eggs (which fish love to eat) rather than an attack on the new guy.  If you have concerns, let us know.  We're happy to help you through it.

May 20, 2011
Greetings!

Well it has certainly been a challenging season so far.  It's been a little difficult keeping our heads above water here (literally some days - we've been flooded three times!) but our greenhouses are full and looking great.  Tomorrow's forecast is calling for lots of sun and temps in the 70's so get out and enjoy!  Shop early, with only one sunny day all week to work with, it's bound to be a little crazy around here.

A huge THANK YOU to Erin & Mick for taking time out of their daily lives to travel home and help out here at the nursery the past couple of weeks!  Thanks also to all of you who took the time to stop by and say hello to them.  Mick headed back home earlier this week, Erin will be here throughout this weekend.

Have a great weekend!

It seems as though water gardens are the way to go this year. Many folks have water in their yards right now...not necessarily on purpose, but you work with what you have.

This week we've already received a new shipments of tropical water lilies (they are already big and really gorgeous), hardy lilies and marginals, water lettuce, and LOTUS!  Lotus always go fast, and we often have trouble re-ordering from our growers.  We have some gorgeous varieties in stock now, so get them early.

To Do This Week:

  • monitor your water temperature
  • add new plants
  • move existing plants to their summer growing locations
  • feed your fish
  • test your water and log the results
  • add beneficial bacteria
  • add algaecide as needed

Creating a "Bog Garden"

Filter Plants

If you've been in our aquatic greenhouse recently, you've seen the huge selection of marginal, or "bog," plants that we carry.  They are beautiful and help to make the pond look more natural.  These plants are perfect for setting on the ledges that are built into your water garden and can add lots of color and contrast to the scene.

But what if you don't have ledges in your pond?

Pre-formed liner ponds, concrete-side ponds or ponds built without plant shelves can still have marginal plants if you simply add a bog area outside of the pond.

The simplest way is to choose an area near the edge of the pond (taking care not to disturb the existing liner) and dig out some of the existing soil. We'd suggest digging  down about 12" inches or so.  The length and width of the area are not really important, but the larger the area, the more plants you'll be able to fit in there!  After removing the soil from the hole, simply line the hole with pond liner and fill it back in with aquatic planting soil. You can plant marginal plants directly in the new "bog" area since it will now hold water.

IF it ever stops raining for more than a day, you may need to add water to your bog area to keep the soil moist.

Bog gardens also make great natural filters if incorporated into your pond design so that your water circulates through the bog area.

in the garden

It feels like there are trucks full of pretty things arriving every day.  I think it feels like that because there are trucks full of pretty things arriving every day.  Our annual growers have really done a fantastic job this year, and the plants are huge and loaded with color.

Our nursery yard flooded for the THIRD time this year, so we're working on getting it back in order. The display beds might not look as pretty as they did a week ago, but the nursery stock is beautiful.

To Do This Week:

  • pull weeds from garden beds early to avoid re-seeding
  • apply a pre-emergent herbicide - we use PREEN or PREEN N GREEN.  It's so simple to use and really will keep new weeds from sprouting for the entire season, great in groundcovers
  • plant container gardens - the rule of thumb is to wait until Memorial Day weekend to plant annuals, but if you want to get a head start, now is a great time to begin filling up pots and planters that can easily be moved or covered should the unthinkable happen
  • apply deer and rabbit repellent to new plants and perennials as they emerge. We use Deer-Scram here and at home and have had great success with it.  Check our info sheet on our website for more...

Plant of the Week

If you haven't noticed the lilacs around town over the past week or so, you really have not been paying attention! (Or maybe you just haven't gone outside since it's raining...) While you may not feel lucky to live in this particular climate right now, knowing that this is the perfect place to grow gorgeous lilacs might make you feel better.

Check out dwarf varieties like "Miss Kim," or our Korean lilacs that are pruned into tree form!

LILACS

Notes:

lilacs bloom on "old" wood (previous year's growth), so should only be pruned early in the season, right after flowering

The Sale Rack

So, here's my tip for this week. Check out the sale rack I set up in the aquatic greenhouse before Mike notices what's there. I don't think he reads this section, so you probably have a head start on him.

Everything on there is marked down at least 50%...some things even more. I'll be in town til Tuesday and will be adding items until then.
