May 13, 2011
Greetings!

We've been trying all day to get this newsletter out to you...somehow we just never quite made it up to the offices!  It seems that once the sun shines, things get pretty busy around here.  And we're not complaining! It's been great to see so many of you in here this last week.

If you haven't been in yet to stock up on annuals or pond plants, come in and see us soon.  We have our best selection of the year right now. Shop early - there are some things that we won't be able to  re-order once they've sold out.

Read on for this week's specials and our top picks from each department!

As always, please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.  A suggestion for keeping rain out of the forecast would be really helpful.

Just in the last few days, we've received truckloads of new products, plants and fish in our aquatic greenhouse.  Our bog plant selection is pretty incredible, if we do say so ourselves!  Lots of sizes, lots of varieties, all beautiful and ready to go home to your pond.

We have grass carp in stock and available for purchase (with permits, of course) beginning on Saturday 5/14.

To Do This Week:

  • begin feeding fish if you haven't already donne so
  • start adding Microbe-Lift PL bacteria

Don'ttips & tricks

Don't overfeed your fish.  Remember that their digestive systems are just waking up.  Once a day will do it for now and no more than they will eat in about five minutes time.  You should still be using a cold water, wheat germ based food.

in the garden

This is the absolute best time of year here at the garden center. Our greenhouses are bursting with annual color, our perennial shelves are stocked, and our nursery yard is beginning to fill up with old favorites and intersting new specimens.

To Do This Week:

  • fertilize perennial gardens to give emerging plants a head start
  • apply deer & rabbit repellant to garden areas and landscape plants (It's easier to prevent them from dining on your prized hostas than it is to scare them off once they find them!)
  • prune dead wood from trees and shrubs
  • set out hummingbird and oriole feeders
  • apply horticultural oil to rid your plants of any overwintering insects

Plant of the Week

One of my all-time favorite vines! Not only do they remind me of my grandparents' house, they are gorgeous, fast-growing, and quite easy to grow.

Height: vining to 20'
Exposure: full sun, BUT they like cool roots, so mulch really well
Soil: prefer rich, well-drained soil, fertilize in spring and regularly throughout growing season
Flowering: spring through summer, color of blooms varies by variety

tips & tricks

My Favorite Time Saver

I'm pretty sure we've told you this one before, but I've repeated it

so many times over the past few days here at the store that I thought I basketsshare it again here.

Do you have an empty planter, just sitting there waiting to be filled with something pretty for the season? Me too.

Option 1:

Buy potting soil. Choose plants. Read all tags to make sure plants will grow in the same conditions.  Stand back.  Decide that your choices maybe don't look that good together.  Repeat selection process several more times.  Take plants home and fill your pot with soil.  Plant your plants.  Collect the empty soil bag, all of those half-full six-packs that you are sure you'll remember to water....you get the picture.

Option 2:

Buy a pre-planted hanging basket. Put it in your pot. Remove the hanger. Done.

In case you're wondering, we do just happen to have some really gorgeous hanging baskets in stock. We'll even take the hangers off for you if you ask nicely!

Heard around the garden center this week...

Many people are reporting that they've seen orioles in the area, along with hummingbirds and even some indigo bunting sightings!

Deer and rabbits seem to be causing trouble all around. We've heard lots of people tell us that these furry pests are eating their plants, hostas in particular,
