Joke of the Week

A very dirty little fellow came in from playing in the garden and asked his mother, "Who am I? "

Ready to play the game she said, "I don't know! Who are you?"

"WOW!" cried the child. "Mrs. Johnson was right! She said I was so dirty, my own mother wouldn't recognize me!"

May 6, 2011

So, did you notice the nice sunny day we had on Thursday? You're welcome.

That's right. I'm taking credit for that. Everyone asked me to bring some sun with me when I came to town. Unfortunately, with the prices airlines charge for additional bags, I was only able to bring enough for one day.

All joking aside, we've banned another four letter word this week.  It starts with "R" and joins its cousin, the "S" word, on the bad list here. We're fully expecting a warm, sunny weekend and we hope to see many of you here at the nursery.  We have lots of new plants, aquatics, and gift items to check out, so stop on in and say hi!

Plants!
That's right, we actually have plants in our aquatic greenhouse. And, what's even better...they're gorgeous!

We just recived a new shipment of both hardy and tropical marginals and a whole bunch of hardy lilies in pinks, whites, and yellows. Some even have buds already! It's starting to look like it's supposed to in here.

Algae

Control algae early

As soon as water warms up, algae kicks into high gear. To stay ahead of it, here are a few tricks you can use.

First, add plants. The more plants you have in the system using up available nitrates (fertilizer) in the water, the less food there will be for the algae.  Early spring is tricky because many of our hardy plants just haven't taken off yet.  Consider adding some submerged oxygenators or some of the gorgeous tropical marginals that we just got in.

Second, use ALGAEFIX when you begin to see the signs of an algae bloom.  This colorless liquid is simply added to the pond for the control of many types of algae.  To help you out, it's even on sale this week!  See our Newsletter Special above.

pink rosesMoms like flowers.

That's just a tip for those of you who are stumped about what to get your Mom for Mothers' Day. And just because we're so helpful, we're devoting this week's "in the garden" section to great gift ideas for the moms in your life.

David Austin roses:

My absolute favorite type of rose. The blooms are huge. The fragrance is incredible. Easy to grow and way better than a bouquet that will soon fade. Lilacs are pretty wonderful, too...

Hanging  baskets:

An easy choice, we have lots of colorful baskets to choose from. All Mom has to do is hang it up (and water it sometimes) for instant spring color.

Bird houses and feeders:

Whether Mom likes humminbirds, bluebirds or sparrows, we have just the right things to help attract them to her yard.

Garden art:

From silly garden stakes to dramatic fountains, we're sure to have something to compliment her style.

Topsoil, potting soil, compost...huh?.Bumper Crop

What is the difference, you ask? (Many of you ask, every day.) Well, here it is in a nutshell.

Topsoil is kind of your average soil.  Used for filling up holes, leveling out the lawn, raising a planted area.  Good topsoil will contain a fair amount of organic matter, but will be heavier than potting soil and not as rich as compost.

Potting soil is the stuff you want to use in containers, particularly hanging containers. It is fairly light-weight and retains moisture well.  Some potting soils (or "potting mixes") even have fertilizer mixed right in.  Best for containers and raised planter boxes.

Compost is the good, rich stuff you add to soil to make it better.  It's basically broken down organic matter that plants need to thrive.  Adding compost helps to condition the existing soil and is almost always recommended when doing any new planting.

Still confused?  Come on in and we'll help you out!
