Q & A Poinsettia Poison
|
Q: Are poinsettias really poisonous?
A: Nope. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, poinsettias are not deadly and are not classified as a poisonous plant.
Of course, you should discourage children and pets from eating them. Chances are if they eat the entire plant, they will experience an upset tummy...just like they would if they ate ANY entire plant. You should also probably avoid rubbing the leaves all over your skin, as the milky sap could cause minor skin irritation.
So, go ahead and worry about something else this holiday season!

Trick of the Trade
Gifts from Your Garden
|
I love using things from nature to decorate my Christmas packages. I like to wrap packages in plain, recycled brown craft paper, but always feel like they need a little something extra. A few of my favorite tricks... Snip a few small pine boughs (from a tree in your yard, or an inconspicuous spot on your Christmas tree) and tie them to a package with raffia. Collect pine cones of various sizes. Small ones make great gift toppers. Try spray painting some in silver or gold and adding a ribbon to the top - a quick, easy, and natural ornament. Berries and dried seed pods make great decorations. Gather a few and tie with a pretty ribbon and attach to the top of your packages. Tie a few small twigs together with a ribbon or some raffia. Look for twigs with interesting bark texture or color. Holly berries and leaves make perfect adornments for your holiday packages. The two best parts? FREE and COMPOSTABLE! Grab your pruners and head out into your yard before you go out and buy any more of those silly bows with the sticky part on the bottom. |

Trick of the Trade Stop Feeding Your Fish! |
Please, stop feeding your fish, NOW! I am still getting custome rs inwho tell me they are still feeding occasionally. Trust me on this one, you are only making yourself feel better, not your fish. You are putting them at great risk. Fish are cold blooded and cannot digest formulated foods in cold water. The food will stay in their digestive tract and rot, minimally causing them much distress, more often causing death.
Don't worry, they won't starve. We stop feeding our fish by the end of October and don't start again until sometime mid April. Seal any left over food in an air tight container and store in a cool, dry place until spring. |
