What Makes Someone a Great Youth Sports Coach?
Anyone who has ever been involved in a youth sports organization can tell you about the good, the okay and the terrible coaches they've had over the years. Hopefully the terrible coaches were far and few in between, but chances are the truly great coaches were just as hard to come by. Since most youth sports organizations rely on volunteers to serve as coaches, finding a mom or dad that has all the skills, know-how, passion and natural ability to coach a team is a lot like finding a needle in a haystack. But when you do find a great youth sports coach, they most likely have these skills...

'Bucs Giving Back to SE AYF Programs
On Monday, June 11, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued their efforts to support those in need by donating a total of $11,000 to two youth football programs that were recently the victims of property theft. The Carrollwood Cardinals received a visit from the Buccaneers, including TE Dallas Clark, DT Gerald McCoy, LB Dekoda Watson and Bucs cheerleaders, who led the group in drills and presented the Cardinals with a check for $7,500.
Within the past two weeks, these youth football programs were vandalized and lost a total of more than $10,000 in football helmets, shoulder pads, and other equipment. The teams are part of the Tampa Bay Youth Football League (TBYFL) and the Unity Youth Football League. The TBYFL, which has offered an organized football and cheerleading program for Bay area children since 1968, aims to teach the fundamentals of good citizenship, character development, strong study habits, and healthy living to local youth in a positive, structured environment. The Carrollwood Cardinals are a new team within the Unity Youth Football League, which aims at providing children from lower-income families with fun, safe opportunities to enjoy football and cheerleading, while developing good sportsmanship and physical fitness.
To learn more about the Buccaneers' efforts to give back, visit www.buccaneers.com. - ThePlaymakers.org, run by Coach Greg Roeszler in Sacramento, is making a difference in the family, by what they do on the field. The company, teaching reading, life skills and football to children who could not otherwise afford it, is beginning to make waves in Northern California and soon the country.
When "Coach Roz" asked NJAYF's Lou Montanaro if he would be interested in donating some of his equipment to his organization, Lou was more than ready. "It's a great thing they are doing in Sacramento and I wanted to help out," he said.
From California to New Jersey, the AYF leagues, coaches and athletes are one big family, and with leaders in the community like Greg Roeszler and Lou Montanaro leading the way, the AYF GIVING BACK initiative will remain strong.
- Bradenton, Florida's AYF Coach Jay Murphy made an impact Donation to Lakewood Ranch Youth Football when he donated Hadar Athletic Blocking Sleds to his program. Thanks for Giving Back Coach! - AYC recently donated over 175 uniforms to our Southwest Region! If you have any uniform or equipment donations please email AYF Services.

Joe's President's Corner
Hey - It's June already - set your iPhone app to GPS for SUCCESS!
I had a college professor who often said, "you have to know where you are, where you're going, and how you're going to get there!" In those days an iPhone with a GPS app did not exist so we took it to mean how to approach everyday life. Let's try that in today's world. Working with youth sports in the year 2012 offers new challenges. Due to recent media coverage parents are more concerned than ever about their children's safety. THAT'S WHERE WE ALL ARE TODAY.
Not only must we plan ahead like always; now we also must do a better job informing everyone of that plan. From the start of Sign-ups to the end of season Awards Dinner, it is important to communicate we are about the safety of the youth we serve. As a leader, YOU need to alert people of WHERE we are going and how we are going to get there.
Here is your "old school" GPS:
Board of Directors Meeting - Review the AYF Philosophy of Giving Back to your Community - Yearly Calendar - Committee Responsibilities -
Tournament Intentions - Association Contact List - Emergency Procedures.
Establish a Budget - see samples at MyAYF.com
Liability - Directors and Officers Insurance - Add Crime Insurance against theft or fraud -Equipment Insurance just to be safe.
Player Sign Ups - Post announcements of sign ups at Malls and other popular places in town. Busy intersections should have announcements posted. Every year AYF National gets complaints of vandals tearing down their Sign Up Announcements, so post the announcements high up where children cannot reach them. Surely adults would not do this?
AYF Registration - Please be accurate in the number of teams you sign up. The difference in teams signed up for membership and those teams listed on your schedule should match up.
Coaches Background Checks - AYF recommends that Coaches are assigned renewable one-year contracts. Your Coaches evaluations at seasons end will serve as a reminder for assignment in the following year.
AYF/AYC Coaches Online Training Course Completion - AYF/AYC requires all head coaches in football and cheerleading who intend to participate in AYF Regional and National Competition to complete the AYF/AYC on line coaches course, or if completed the course last year they must take the AYF/AYC online refresher course. There is a two million dollar liability coverage that comes with the completion of each course. AYF/AYC strongly recommends that ALL Coaches take the course or refresher course and receive the additional coverages.
Giving Back to Community Projects - Your members can make a difference.
Zero Tolerance for Hate and Bullying - Nothing is more important than protecting all the Children in your program. Be very clear that you do not permit anyone to hate or bully your Members, Players, and Coaches. Don't allow the better athletes to get a pass on their behavior.
AYF Web Site - Assign an administrator to contribute regularly about your participants, coaches and administrators. We are always looking for great stories to tell.
Social Media - Have a public space for making friends and connections by encouraging members to participate. Like AYF on Facebook to sign up for AYF/AYC contests and grants.
24-hour Communication - You can count on the National Office to help when needed within 24 hours.
Recruiting New Associations - Your neighbors may wish to join AYF Nation. Spread the word of our "giving back" and "kids first" goals.
I hope my version of a GPS is helpful. I have to go now, as I have a video conference call waiting from Jack Bauer.
