"Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Joe's Presidents Corner

Why were we born?

Viola Davis accepted her Critics Choice Award for her acting role in 'The Help' by saying "It is said that the two happiest times in your life are when you are born and when you find out WHY you were born."

Twitter, Facebook, U Tube and AIM make us feel that we are important and the center of the Universe. In today's world being a "Celebrity" is a moving target that anyone can capture in their "fifteen minutes of glory".

But I was so happy to hear one of AYF Presidents tell me upon leaving the AYF Hall of Fame Dinner "That was a humbling experience" When I asked why, he said "to be in a room full of past and present youth volunteers who dedicated the greater part of their lives to kids is almost mystical".   O. K. he was being dramatic, yet truthful about the humble part.

So much of today is about people losing themselves in order to BE SOMEONE rather than DO SOMETHING. 2012 will see even more opportunities for us to 'be someone' over cyberspace. Funny, life gets easier due to technology but it becomes more difficult to communicate personally because there is an APP for everything---- except being human.

As the guy who runs the complaint department for one million members, I am learning each day about being more human. Remember the film '2001 A Space Oddesy''? The Computer overruled the human and locked him out of the space ship. Isn't that what is coming in the future? We humans do the research to find that 80% of traffic accidents happen while the driver is texting - Duhhhh!

I really don't mind the AYF complaints if they are from humans (phone or in person). How many of us change our thinking when we actually talk rather than read an email from someone? Let's stop this "technology monster" get back to talking to each other. We are all tempted to just click "send" rather than face the issue one on one.
That is why we need to celebrate those who work with youth as AYF Hall of Famers. Football and Cheerleading are difficult sports to learn. They require specific skills and courage to reach a competitive level. What can be more human than that? The miracle is a child learning to achieve these skills. When you see a magic light in the eyes of a child that you helped DO SOMETHING --- is when you will BE SOMEONE. That is WHY.
