Joe's Presidents Corner
Sign up time Why is AYF different from the others?
If you believe the many email blasts to you over the Internet you would naturally think your missing out on "the secret of successful Youth Football and Cheer Organizations." In business you must balance your Sales, Production, Finance, and Research. Youth work is a bit of all of that but it is not Rocket Science. Volunteers teach kids by their example. Forget how many NFL Stars you developed. Bottom line - Do you create an environment for kids to complete the circle of giving back to their community?
Hey ! I am no expert on Child Psychology but raising five children and watching nine grandchildren grow up has given me some powerful insight. Kids don't care how much you know - until they know how much you care! Children believe in magic, wizards, and things they cannot see, touch, taste, hear, or feel. Use that belief to capture imaginations and to teach values with football and cheer. One word of encouragement can make a world of difference. That moment when a child discovers they have the power to perform skills that Parents, Coaches, and Adult leaders deem important is the most relevant.
You want the real secret? On any level, Youth - High School - College - Pros, the kids may be bigger but they are still kids. I know you - you also relive the glory days of your youth through the eyes of the children. This is your reward for helping kids. "We do not stop having fun because we grow old - we grow old because we stop having fun." Your Coaches need to have fun too. Teach them to teach kids. The Green Bay Packers will never hire your Coach as the second coming of Lombardi. Kelly Ripa (a former cheerleader before stardom on "Regis and Kelly") said of Cheerleading "any time you can get girls to turn off their cell phones, not focus on boys, and do something athletic is certainly worthwhile!" A work ethic of practicing your skills to improve rather than expecting instant gratification can be learned at an early age. Learning takes place in the worlds most dynamic classrooms, the football fields and cheer mats. This can and should be carried over into academic pursuits.
Lastly, let's never forget Teamwork. The act of self sacrifice for the greater good. Being a blocker or the base for a pyramid is important to the success of the teams success. We see this in Japan with the Brave Nuclear Plant Workers diligent efforts to control the leaking radiation. They sadly may be giving the ultimate sacrifice. Marin Luther King Jr. as a youth saw a group of children drawing circles with chalk on the sidewalks. Each declaring "this is my circle" then stepping inside. He picked up a piece of chalk and drew a circle around all the group and said "now all of you are in our circle".
Sign up volunteers who are still having fun and are giving back to their communities. The kids will be the real winners in your organization.
