All about safety

We are responsible for teaching our kids the proper way to play and perform to avoid injuries that can cripple a team and devastate a young life.  Keep an eye out for safety features in upcoming issues of The Huddle.  We are committed to helping you support your young athletes.

Football
Regular conditioning of equipment helps prolong the life of expensive athletic gear and ensures that athletic equipment continues to meet the performance standards you expect. Check out some recommendations from Riddell.  Click here to read more.

Cheer
It is important for your coaches and squad to be prepared with an Emergency Action Plan in the event of a serious injury.  Here is what the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA) suggests.  Click here to read more.

Joe's Presidents Corner

Spring is busting out all over. Across America, kids are now in their back yards playing catch with their fathers. I always liked to "set the scene" before throwing the baseball or football to my children. "Now this one is for the World Series title if you catch it. Your team is counting on you so keep your eye on the ball until it is safely in your glove."

My sons would shuffle their feet nervously and urge me to throw the ball and get it over with.  For football, our closing drama was always "This is the last play of the Super Bowl and the ball is coming to you; cut off your outside foot and look over your inside shoulder for the game winning pass."  It may have been hokie, but the neighbors kids always joined us, so it must have been fun for them, too.

Parents are funny people.  They will tell you that their child is a better athlete, student, singer, dancer, or artist than any of their peers.  In the eyes of a parent, there is no one better. Sadly, in some cases, this obsession with their child grows, putting pressure on the child to obtain a college scholarship and eventual big time professional athlete contract.

AYF Associations always have at least one volunteer, who gets things done.  These dedicated people may or may not have children in the program, but take on many tasks like stocking the concession stand with food, confirming the game time with the referees, and painting the field lines.  Unfortunately, these reliable volunteers are approached by disgruntled parents.  "My son is getting mistreated by your supposed coaching staff."

It is always difficult to deal with concerned parents who want the best for their children.  The primary parental complaint usually pertains to lack of playing time for their child.  Instead of cutting off concerned parents, volunteers should hear out the concerned parent.  A trusty response would be to explain that AYF coaches are highly qualified as they must be background checked, trained and contracted for this year.  Suggest talking to the head coach or working on some football skills outside of practice and in your backyard.  Once engaged in conversation, the concerned parent may even become more involved with the team volunteer efforts. Parents do need to be heard. Parents need to be involved. Final tip; if the parent insists that he meets with the coach he/she must bring the child to that meeting.  This way everyone can learn and help the young athlete develop and more people are involved with the team.  Many supporting hands make light work.
