Message from the AYF President
Heads up Football Head to head spearing is a penalty on all levels youth, High School, College and the Pros. Why then does it still occur so often?
I believe it is due to poor coaching. The Abusive coach will tell you football is a violent sport. The good coaches will tell you football is a sport where the execution of fundamental techniques insures a player's safety.
To confront the issues of Head injuries we have prepared an excerpt from AYFs New Coaching Course (debuting in 2010).
The injuries occurring most often are during Tackling and Blocking.....
Read HEADS UP FOOTBALL now for the safest fundamental techniques of blocking and tackling at the point of contact for all age groups.

AYF President Joe Galat in Warren Moon's New Book
In Warren Moon's new book "Never give up your dream" by Don Yeager, you will find a special mention of AYF President Joe Galat.
In 1984 most NFL Teams harbored a bias against Black Quarterbacks which threatened to sidetrack Warrens dream of playing in the National Football League.
Few NFL Coaches spoke out against that bias. Former Houston Oilers Defensive Coach Joe Galat told the NFL he believed in giving Moon a change to prove what everybody knows deep down inside.
Joe said to the media "any NFL Team that signs Warren Moon will become a winner".
Joe was right as Warren Moon went on to play in nine Pro Bowls and is presently the only black Quarterback inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Joe Galat remains the conscious of the NFL this time on matters of Safety and Youth Football.

Sportsmanship...
TORRINGTON - In the midst of another one-sided loss for Wolcott Tech's second-year varsity football program Saturday afternoon, a moment happened that will live forever in the minds of those who were there to experience it.
Avon may have won the game going away 49-6, but that did not stop Falcons coach Brett Quinion from showing a great deal of sportsmanship. Early in the fourth quarter, Quinion called a timeout and walked across the field to the Wolcott Tech sideline to talk to Wildcats coach Jamie Coty.
The reason? To give a 17-year-old senior a chance to have a poignant moment.
This past month, Wolcott Tech senior Nick Reardon was diagnosed with cancer. The offensive guard/linebacker could only play in one more game, and he could not actually play-in others words, he could not be hit, per doctor's orders.
Coty wanted to get Reardon, the team's punter, into the game so he could kick the ball. Reardon and Coty got more than that.
On a second and nine from the Tech 17, Reardon took a handoff up the middle and ran down the right sideline for an 82-yard touchdown to make it 42-6. After the score, Reardon's Wildcat teammates all ran out onto the field to graduate him. When he got to the sideline, teammates kept coming over and slapping him on the back. Reardon, not one to bring attention to him self, treated it as if it were just another play.
"I got nothing but praise and respect for (Avon's) coaching staff," Coty said. "(Quinion) called a timeout and said let's get that kid a touchdown. That meant a lot to our program."
