A rural arts organization has to have many friends to survive. Volunteers, corporate partners and private patrons, are certainly numbered among the most important of these. But sometimes, steady, unwavering public support goes unnoticed. Arts in McNairy has been very fortunate to grow up in a community where the vast majority of our elected officials, at every level, have understood the importance of our mission. None have been more supportive, over the years, than the city of Selmer. They were the earliest to invest in community cultural development by including AiM in their annual budget and their unflagging support has continued through two mayors and numerous aldermen. To each and every one, we say a heartfelt thanks. Your vision for a community where the arts take priority serves as an inspiration to other towns around the region and we believe you will agree that the investment has paid off.
Continuing our look back at ten years of Arts in McNairy, Jimmy Whittington shares some thoughts on what AiM has meant to the community. Whittington was mayor of Selmer when AiM first took flight and his response to our request for public support in 2001 was immediate and decisive. His board established a precedent for funding the arts that has continued and even expanded with Mayor Robinson's administration. Arts in McNairy is the envy of many rural arts agencies who struggle to educate their public officials about the economic development benefits that naturally follow from investing in local arts and culture. We are proud to say we've never had that problem in McNairy County.
In this issue, you will also find another AiM newsletter flashback. By 2003, AiM was really beginning to hit her stride as evidenced by the two inside pages shown below. The theatre program was entering it's second season; the summer concert series its third. The literary committee was planning Fiction and a Flick while visual arts leaders were staging workshops and showings for local artists. Art camp was a huge success enrolling around 50 local children and AiM was just beginning to partner with other organizations to expand our reach in the community. We think you will enjoy taking a look back at a piece of our history in the spring 2003 print edition of "Taking AiM" at the bottom of the page.

"When one becomes involved with the economic development of their community, you learn quickly that industries looking to relocate to your area are very conscious of three items. They are education, recreation and arts/culture. While many communities pay all their attention to the CEO and CFO, it is actually the Plant Manager which will most influence the decision. They are the one who will have a family residing in the area. Consequently, they are most interested in available activities and opportunities for spouse and children.
Before AiM, McNairy County had no county wide arts programs. While there were many in the county who didn't understand or see the need, it was very obvious to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Selmer, this was an opportunity which we could not let pass. At our first chance we established an appropriation in the city budget to fund the beginning operations of this worthy effort, and then continued it in the following years. Very few other decisions were as clear cut and without question 'the right and good thing to do.' Therefore, it is very gratifying to us to see AiM flourishing, and knowing that we had a small part in the beginning."

Community Band Gears Up for Spring Concert | |
| | THE AIM COMMUNITY BAND WANTS YOU! |
Dust off the hold horn or drum and get ready to join the AiM Community Band! The band will soon be in rehearsal for the first ever, spring concert tentatively scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday April 16 at the new farmers market and musical heritage park in downtown Selmer. Formed in 2007 the band is under the direction AiM Board Member and Music Committee Chair, Ronnie Brooks. As a former music educator, Brooks knew that many student musicians put down their instruments after graduation never to pick them up again. He also knew that this was not entirely by choice. He always felt that many amateur musicians would jump at the opportunity to play in a organized setting again if only one were available. Thus was born the AiM Community Band. The band is composed of musicians of all skill levels and ages. Retirees and students mix and mingle with ease in an informal and fun setting where the focus is always on the joy of playing music together. The band usually has about 30 players at each public performance. There are no participation fees but musicians must supply their own instrument. There are typically 6-8 rehearsals before each performance and the music selections are challenging enough to be interesting for most amateurs and audiences but not too hard to be frustrating for those who are not exactly at the top of their musical game. Rehearsal at the Selmer Middle School Band Hall last from an hour and a half to two hours. Just show up ready to play! Over the last few years, the Community Band has been performing a patriotic summer concert in conjunction with Selmer Parks and Recreation's Independence Day festivities and participating in a Christmas concert along with the AiM Community Chorus. The spring concert will mark the bands solo debut. Several rehearsals have been scheduled to prepare for the concert: 6:30 PM Tuesday, March 8th 6:30 PM Tuesday, March 15th 6:30 PM Tuesday, March 29th 6:30 PM Tuesday, April 5th 6:30 PM Tuesday, April 12th 2:00 PM Saturday, April 16th (Performance Date) |
