January 2009

Happy New Year!

Despite widespread financial fears in 2008 Arts in McNairy had one of the most successful seasons on record.  Global economic pressures, it is said, cause people to focus on matters closer to home so we sincerely believe that we will see even further progress in community cultural development in 2009.  With the Latta Building proposal moving ahead, a new slate of directors and officers coming on board in March, the revival of the Literary Arts Committee and the continuation of successful drama, music, heritage and visual arts programs we have reason to be optimistic.  Please join us in making 2009 the perfect year to "take AiM on the arts."
The Da Vinci Code - Book Club Meets January 15
Da Vinci
The first book club selection for 2009 is Dan Brown's blockbuster the Da Vinci Code.  The club will meet 7:00 PM, January 15 in McNairy Regional Hospital's conference room adjacent to the lobby area just inside the main  entrance.   Light snacks will be provided and Dr. Martha Glover will moderate the discussion.  AiM membership is not required for attendance, everyone is welcome.  There are no fees for participation

The new book club is being organized by the AiM Literary Arts Committee and committee Chair, Leanne Emmons is actively seeking community input.  If you have recommendations for future book club selections or suggestions for other projects you are invited to join the online discussion at the AiM blog:  www.artsinmcnairy.blogspot.com. What are you reading?  What are your interests?  What would you like to see the book club discuss this year?  Let us know and we will see you at book club!
Anne of Green Gables Auditions Jan. 26 & 27
AiM LogoOpen auditions for AiM's production of Anne of Green Gables are set for 6:00-8:00 PM, Monday January 26 and Tuesday January 27 at the Selmer Civic Center, 232 North 5th Street in Selmer. Many children's roles are available for all age and experience levels. A few (optional) adult roles may also be available. Principle characters include, Anne (multiple cast members from ages 8-18), Marilla & Matthew Cuthbert, Moody, Josie and Dianna. Production dates are scheduled for March 13-15 and school shows are also being discussed.  Inquire at the auditions about updated information and rehearsal schedules.

2009 marks the 100th anniversary of this beloved piece of children's literature and AiM is pleased to commemorate the occasion with this dramatic adaptation. When the Cuthbert's of Green Gables agree to adopt a boy to help with the farm work they are in for a surprise. Imagine their consternation when Anne Shirley, a girl in her teens, is sent by the orphanage by mistake! Anne touches Matthew Cuthbert's heart with her vivid imagination and charitable viewpoint, but it takes time to reach the tender heart beneath Marilla's hard exterior. Then there is young Josie Pye, a lad named Moody Spurgeon and Dianna, Anne's "bosom buddy."

This lovely classic is simple to present and full of warmth and wit. Everyone is invited to audition regardless of theatre experience
Work to Begin on Rockabilly Mural in Early 2009
AiM LogoWork on the Rockabilly mural in Downtown Selmer is slated to begin this month or in early February.  The project  which is meant to highlight McNairy County's significant role in the history and development of Rockabilly Music is being cosponsored by the Selmer Business Alliance, the McNairy County Chamber of Commerce and Arts in McNairy.  There are plans to keep a photo journal while the mural is being painted and conclude the project with an unveiling ceremony and Rockabilly Music celebration in the spring.  Further details will be available as the project progresses.

While McNairy County has certainly contributed to Tennessee's rich musical heritage, visual arts have not been under represented. Brian Tull, a native of McNairy County who currently resides in Nashville, has been contracted to do the mural.  Brian is, simply stated, one of the finest young artists working in the state.  We are proud to welcome his home for this historic project.  Learn more about Brian and his work (sample above) at his website:   www.briantull.com
Cultural Heritage Study Continues in 2009

Do you have information about the cultural heritage of McNairy County?  How about newspaper clippings, flyers or posters about concerts, dances or singings held in the county?  Do you have, or know someone who has pictures of the old time Bluegrass and string music pickers, the Elvis show in Bethel Springs, or square dances at Finger?  Do you own old broom making, weaving and spinning equipment or items used in any of the other folk and heritage crafts?  If so we want to hear from you!

In 2009 the Arts in McNairy Heritage and Culture Committee will renew the cultural assessment efforts that began in 2006 with the groundbreaking Community, Culture and Commerce project. The goal is to gain a deeper understand of the cultural legacy of McNairy County and Southwest Tennessee.  To be successful we will need everyone's help.  We would like to document the various folk art traditions and musical heritage through pictures, print, local publications and those wonderful family stories passed down through the generations.

Several ways to approach the assessment are being considered but we wanted to get the word out early.  Dust off the old scrap books and take a turn through the attic.  You never know what you might find.  There will be a meeting and call for information sometime in the spring of 2009.  Until then, pass this story along to the family historian or anyone interested in such a project.

Please direct all inquires and information to the AiM Heritage and Culture Committee at:

March Artisan Trail Just Around the Corner
The AiM Artisan Trail spring tour of studios is scheduled for March 22, 2009. The event which features some of the finest working artists and artisans in Southwest Tennessee never fails to attract a large crowd and this year will be no exception.  In addition to some familiar local favorites, several new artisans have expressed an interest in participation which could carry the number of tour stops to over twenty.  Come early and plan to stay late!

Jury selection for participation will take place in February.   More information about the time and location of the organizational meetings will be available in the February newsletter.  Artists interested in participation should contact a member of the AiM Heritage and Culture Committee at: heritage_culture@artsinmcnairy.com
AiM Artist Spotlight - Vicki Sisco Cowan
AiM Logo
Vicki Sisco Cowan can usually be found playing in the mud.  It is a habit, she admits, that developed in early childhood and it has served her surprisingly well.  Mud, in this case, means clay and Vicki's messy dabblings now yield stunning works of art instead of mud pies.  Some of the pieces produced in her Selmer studio are functional, some are purely decorative but all bear the unmistakable mark of a masters touch.  With a duel degree in art and creative writing, Vicki has exhibited widely and is a published poet.  She currently serves on the Board of Directors of Arts in McNairy where she is an active member of the Visual Arts, Heritage and Culture and Literary Arts Committees.

Though Vicki's skills are well known and in demand around the region, she was recently honored with a commission that has a more international flair.  She is shown above with an original piece of stoneware pottery which was recently presented to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan at a birthday celebration and reception held in his honor.  The piece was designed and built specifically for the occasion and presented by McNairy County Economic Development Coordinator, Ted Moore at a December economic summit in Nashville.  "We wanted to present him with a unique gift that expressed something about the people of McNairy County," said Moore, "and a piece of handmade pottery from an artist like Vicki was the perfect choice."  The gift was gratefully accepted on the Emperor's behalf by the Japanese Consulate-General, Hiroshi Sato, and will be on display in the private collection at his office in Nashville.

The choice seems particularly appropriate since the Japanese themselves have a long and rich pottery
tradition.  In fact, Vicki combined a traditional Japanese glaze called Tenmouko with more familiar American glazes in a perfect expression of the cooperative spirit demonstrated at the economic summit. The piece was fettled and sgraffitoed from a slab of stoneware clay and finished with golden splashes and edging.  The piece was signed and numbered and presented with a certificate of authenticity that read in part,  "The pottery leaf incorporates modern techniques while remaining an artistic symbol of the heritage-steeped traditions of McNairy County, Tennessee."

It is quite an honor to receive such a prestigious commission and we congratulate Vicki for this and her many fine contributions to the cultural life of McNairy County.
