Yoga Study Books
In February, we began our study of the original yoga knowledge, and building a bridge to our JudeoChristian traditions. The 196 yoga sutras, or little lessons, were compiled some 500-800 years before Christ. You can find many translations and interpretations on the Internet for free if you'd like to follow along. Sanskrit is hard to translate into English. However, I enjoy these two translations as the commentators often set the lessons in a Christian context. Here are my picks for the best two:

Below is a brand new translation/commentary--the one above was written in the 1930s I believe. The cover is a bit scary for Westerners, but the commentary makes the sutras, well--rather enlightening!

Spiritual Formation
I'm excited!  With the next sutra we finish Chapter One in Patanjali's original yoga text (see lefthand column). Next Friday we begin Chapter Two, where we get into the real nuts and bolts of yoga. You'll discover useful and practical ways to develop a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God through time-tested techniques. Stay tuned!

Yoga Sutra I.51 When even the subtle samskaras {influences or impression} have subsided, all movement of the mind ceases and there is contemplation without seed.

This sutra above speaks of a state of perfect union with God, freed from any outside stimuli or internal distractions. Dr. Ravindra uses a quotation from Plotinus saying that this is like a "flight from the alone to the Alone." The word "seed " in the above refers to the beginnings of something that could take you away, such as the seeds of desire. Yesterday we talked about how thoughts from the past can sometimes grab at us when we sit in prayer and meditation. Ravindra says this lesson doesn't mean we must forget the past, but rise above its conditioning upon our present selves as we approach God.

Bible Study: 1 John 3
(from BibleGateway.com)
Key Bible passage: 1 John 3:9a
9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him
I can't hear the word "seed" in a spiritual context without thinking of this beautiful chapter in I John. I hope you take the time to read it in its entirety today. The whole purpose of meditation is to get out of the way to allow God's seed (biologic and botanic) to take root in our minds and hearts.

TODAY'S CONTEMPLATION
For prayer and meditation to be effective, we must tackle the most difficult of human challenges, to lay down our ego as a sacrifice before God's altar. How tough is that--to rid ourselves of all our human "packaging" we've worked a lifetime to accumulate! Most of us have invented an elaborate mythology about ourselves--we are especially strong or brave or intelligent or capable in certain ways. Or, conversely, we are hopelessly clumsy or fat or incompetent. At the feet of God, we are all equal, and all God's children as today's chapter reminds us. "24Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us." I hope you make room for the Spirit today!
Can This Be True?
I ran across an interesting study in an airplane magazine recently. In a research study from Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, scientists discovered that cows respond to human love and attention by producing more milk! When dairy farmers named their animals and called them frequently by name, milk production spiked significantly. Many large dairy operations have dispensed with names and just label their producers "Cow #379", for example."

This must be true for humans as well. The Bible makes many references to God calling us by name, especially in Isaiah 43 and 49:

1
But now, this is what the LORD says-
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
       "Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

My husband taught me a valuable lesson the other day. As we were checking out of the airport, he spent some time with the nice woman who runs the Park N Fly checkout operation. He made a point to call her by name and they always recognize and greet one another as he is certainly a frequent flyer. Because he takes that time, she has bailed him out of more than one parking emergency, such as a misplaced ticket.

We are called to show the love of God to others, and I think this is one simple step everyone can take--to strike up personal relationships with the people we see frequently who often get overlooked or ignored. Who might those people be for you? There isn't a person alive who couldn't use an extra smile and show of appreciation to brighten a day.

The other day, I asked someone why they liked a certain church pastor. "He made it a point to learn everyone's names. I liked that!" he replied. These days, I don't think you can be a successful leader or politician without that skill. If you have serious trouble remembering names, you might want to take a look at the book below. I haven't seen it, but I hear it's the best of its type and has earned excellent reviews. Learning the memory skills necessary to recall names and faces is reputedly a great way to keep the mind active and stave off Alzheimer's.

Cobra
Cobra is a great pose to tone the muscles of the lower back. Pushing up and down with "Cobra pushups" can build muscle in the upper arms, shoulders and rotator cuff muscles. Watch your arm position! Keep the fingers spread wide and the elbows tucked into the body, rather than splaying the elbows wide as you go up and down--to protect those delicate rotators!
