Yoga Study Books
In February, we began our study of the original yoga knowledge, and building a bridge to our JudeoChristian traditions. The 196 yoga sutras, or little lessons, were compiled some 500-800 years before Christ. You can find many translations and interpretations on the Internet for free if you'd like to follow along. Sanskrit is hard to translate into English. However, I enjoy these two translations as the commentators often set the lessons in a Christian context. Here are my picks for the best two:

Below is a brand new translation/commentary--the one above was written in the 1930s I believe. The cover is a bit scary for Westerners, but the commentary makes the sutras, well--rather enlightening!

Spiritual Formation
Yoga Sutra I.35  Those forms of concentration which result in extraordinary perceptions encourage perseverance of the mind.

In our yoga study book, we are in the section about various methods to calm the mind through concentration, the step which must be mastered before turning into the deeper concentration called meditation. I recall my first forays into concentration 15 years ago when I began my daily practice of prayer, scripture & meditation. If you can learn to flush all the "stuff" out of your mind--the nagging worries, the anxiety, the stray thoughts that run down rabbit holes--and concentrate on the sacred, then you will discover something wonderful. Some might call it a heightened sense of intuition. I discovered random bursts of insight so rewarding that it certainly did encourage me to persevere.

Ravindra (book left) discusses what happens when we use our powers of concentration as we practice yoga movements. "Paying attention to and staying with finer and finer sensations within the body is one of the surest ways to steady the wandering mind. The mind has a tendency to wander, but connecting the mind to the body through sensation helps steady it and assist it in remaining present in the here and the now." I believe that is one reason why we emerge so mentally refreshed after a challenging hour of hatha yoga practice. It's impossible to tick through your To-Do List while trying to balance and relax into Dancer, for example. Next time you tackle a particularly challenging pose, don't just go through the motions. Take inventory of every muscle as you move through the pose. Concentrate on achieving the "knife's edge" in the pose--where you are really pushing yourself to your physical limit, but not to the point of pain.

Bible Study: 2 Peter 1  (from BibleGateway.com)
Key Bible passage: 2 Peter 1: 5-8
5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I never get tired of this opening chapter in 2 Peter. Our yoga lesson today suggests that glimpses of godliness we find through concentration give us the motivation we need to persevere.

TODAY'S CONTEMPLATION

From hints he gives us in this epistle, Peter wrote this letter late in his life. Clearly, he had a deep understanding of the rewards of perseverance in the Lord. May the morning star rise in your heart today as you concentrate on Peter's message:

19And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Last Day I Promise!
The Amazing Soup Diet now is THE most popular subject I've written about in my column, based on traffic to the Good Housekeeping website where it is described. Friend Karen says this was first written up many years ago, so I guess it's old news.

What we found most amazing about it was that the soup seemed to regenerate overnight in a dark refrigerator. The next day, there appeared to be more soup stock than the day before, even though we ate out of the pot every day. Toward the end of the week, I was thinking about opening up a soup stand in front of my house. However, we decided to invite a large group of friends over last night PRIMARILY for fellowship, but also to get rid of the stuff.

Our final version morphed into a seafood gumbo. We added fresh okra to the basic recipe, plus three pounds of what may be the last shrimp from the Gulf and two pounds of fish--tilapia and salmon.  Despite eating this all week, I must admit I enjoyed this last version. We STILL had leftovers, which we insisted some guests take home.

This soup is a lovely way to enjoy vegetables, especially if you have a garden with excess inventory right now. If you haven't taken time to look at the concept, visit the Amazing Soup diet here at the Good Housekeeping website. And yes, despite adding some hearty cornbread and a healthy dessert last night, I did drop most of my vacation poundage this week.

SUNSCREENS REVISITED: Recently I wrote up a column on some of the dangerous chemicals found in most commercial sunscreens that many consumer advocates are recommending being pulled. The primary bad guy that the Environmental Working Group (EWG) warns against is oxybenzone. The British Medical Journal reported way back in 1990 that people who slather oxybenzone on their skin actually have a significantly higher chance of getting melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Sometimes the name itself is disguised on labels as Benzophenon-3, and is often used in self-tanning lotions as well. This comes from a 2008 report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control:  "A new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that 97% of Americans are contaminated with a widely-used sunscreen ingredient called oxybenzone that has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage."

We pulled out all the sunscreens currently in our house, and even the ones from companies that tout themselves as "natural" such as Aveeno, Lubriderm, and Neutrogena contained oxybenzone. Burt's Bees is almost OK as it has no oxybenzone or PABA, but EWG thinks the chemicals in the fragrance may trigger or exacerbate allergies. If you want to check the rating of your sunscreen (which should be worn daily on exposed skin), visit the EWG website. Their database was recently revised with the latest research results on virtually every sunscreen product on the market. Oxybenzone is used in many health and beauty products because it helps the product to be absorbed into the skin, so you might want to check your labels.
Dancer
I LOVE this pose! For beginners, start with a simple one-legged balance and pull your right foot into your right buttock for a great quad stretch. After you master that with ease, then you are ready to push your foot back away from the glute into your hand and extend into Dancer. You may want a counter or chair in front of you just in case. The trick to extending into the full pose is really pushing that foot into the hand--it steadies you. Plus, it helps avoid the newbie mistake of keeping the foot too close to the body making it impossible to stretch out. Watch yourself in a mirror. Success comes when you can see your toes above your head. Below is the regal-looking student Denise Heath-Gay.
