If I write anything about body chemistry, I'm almost guaranteed to receive an e-mail from Dr. Warren Goux, a distinguished chemistry professor at UTDallas. Warren sounds off below on my last column on the health benefits of coffee. He and his students have spent many years doing original research on nutrition and supplements. It's great to have such an authority weighing in to keep me in line! Thanks, Warren!

FYI, I always love to hear from my readers and if you have an opinion or news of value to our readers, please shoot me an E-mail at sarah@redeemingyoga.com.

Sarah: Well, I needed something to kick off my Monday.  I can't drink regular coffee in the morning because they almost always cause migraines for me about 11 am.  After lunch I can't stay away from it.  I've been known to have 3 cups in the afternoon and another after dinner, no ill effects.  But that's really not why I'm responding to your newsletter, Sarah.  A couple years ago I decided to give students in my Instrumental Analysis course some free rein and have them analyze caffeine in beverages.  The number one beverage for caffeine content was Mountain Dew.  It was significantly stronger than the so-called high energy drinks you now see at convenience stores.  In second place was UTD chemistry coffee.  Starbucks was half way down the list.  Teas were also quite high and green tea had nearly as much caffeine as UTD CC.  Here is a link:

So green tea, while containing many beneficial effects, such as polyphenol antioxidants, also contains nearly as much caffeine as coffee.

Yoga Study Books
In February, we began our study of the original yoga knowledge, and building a bridge to our JudeoChristian traditions. The 196 yoga sutras, or little lessons, were compiled some 500-800 years before Christ. You can find many translations and interpretations on the Internet for free if you'd like to follow along. Sanskrit is hard to translate into English. However, I enjoy these two translations as the commentators often set the lessons in a Christian context. Here are my picks for the best two:

How to Know God: The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali

Below is a brand new translation/commentary--the one above was written in the 1930s I believe. The cover is a bit scary for Westerners, but the commentary makes the sutras, well--rather enlightening!

Announcement!

PLEASE NOTE:  Your Yoga Coach will be on vacation from May 15-June 1. The last yoga class will be Thursday, May 13 and resume June 2.

I usually like to post my column when I'm on vacation, but this time I will be in Germany and away from the Internet. I'm really looking forward to walking in the path of Hildegard von Bingen, the great Christian writer, leader, abbess, playwright, poet, composer and all-around AWESOME woman who lived from 1098-1179. Her music is still performed today. You can hear some if you sign in to Pandora and ask for Hildegard von Bingen. Free! We are staying our first three nights in Bingen am Rhein and I look forward to visiting the museum dedicated to her. Still brushing up on my German as there are no subtitles there! To give you some vicarious thrills, here's a photo of Bingen where we'll be next weekend:

Spiritual Formation
Yoga Sutra I.25  In Him, knowledge is infinite. In others, it is only a germ.

The goal of yoga practice is to learn to sit and quiet the mind and body, so as to usher in the presence of God. When our minds and bodies are restless, we have no capability to listen and learn from the Great Teacher. Think about it! If we enter into prayer yet our thoughts are constantly wandering to our To-Do List or that frustrating co-worker or the bird outside the window or the smell of breakfast cooking in the other room, there is no way we can tune into the presence of God. In the weeks ahead, we will be looking at specific and practical ways to develop a deeper relationship with our Living God. I look forward to it! As always, I enjoy hearing your thoughts and suggestions as we journey together: sarah@redeemingyoga.com.

Bible Study: John 6 (from BibleGateway.com)
Key Bible passage: John 6:43-47
43"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. 44"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.
There is a lot going on in John 6, starting with the beloved story of the loaves and fishes. The second half of the chapter contains the heart of Christ's teachings and even he admits that they are difficult to comprehend. 35Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 36But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe."

TODAY'S CONTEMPLATION

Are you listening and learning? Yoga does advocate reading Scripture regularly as an avenue to God, yet boldly states that the most effective spiritual learning happens through direct encounters with His Spirit.

60On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?"

61Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? 62What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. 64Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him."

66From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

President's Cancer Panel Releases Groundbreaking Report
I was very glad to see this report out this morning that acknowledges environmental cancer risks. Many other governments in Europe and Canada have already taken steps to reduce these risks. I'm hopeful that this report will spur our government into action. Yet everyone can take individual measures to protect themselves from these risks. I don't normally violate copyright law when I report in this column, but this information is too important to paraphrase. This was lifted from today's press release:

Exposure to potential cancer risks in daily life is widespread but underestimated, especially for children, a presidential panel said today.

The President's Cancer Panel said the public remains by and large unaware of such common cancer risks as formaldehyde, benzene and radon. It's the first time the group has focused on environmental cancer risks in its annual report to the president.

"The mere fact that the President's Cancer Panel has this report is going to make people more aware," said panel chair Dr. Lasalle Leffall Jr., an oncologist and professor of surgery at Howard University College of Medicine.

The panel also recommends reducing environmental cancer risks a cornerstone of cancer prevention efforts and said doctors need to do a better job considering potentially harmful chemical exposures when diagnosing patients.

The report also faults U.S. policy for allowing most of the 80,000 chemicals in use to go largely unstudied and unregulated. For example, the report says, bisphenol A (BPA) remains unregulated in consumer products such as plastic bottles, can liners and food wrap "despite the growing link between BPA and several diseases, including various cancers."

Risks of environmental exposure are especially acute for children, who weigh less but - pound for pound - take in more food, water and air than adults. Toxic chemicals also remain active longer in children's bodies and their developing brains are more prone to chemical exposure.

Leffall said the panel decided to publish the report on environmental cancer risks this year even in absence of proof that particular exposures cause cancer. Case in point: Cell phones. Leffall said even though science has not shown electromagnetic energy from cell phone use causes cancer, the report takes a cautious approach and recommends callers wear headsets, or text, to reduce exposure.

To lessen cancer risks, the 240-page report also recommends:

* Removing shoes before entering the home to avoid tracking in toxic chemicals such as pesticides.

* Filtering tap water.

* Using stainless steel, glass or BPA-free plastic water bottles.

* Microwaving in ceramic or glass instead of plastic containers.

* Minimizing consumption of food grown with pesticides and meat raised with antibiotics and growth hormone.

* Minimizing consumption of processed, charred or well-done meats, which contain carcinogenic heterocyclic amines and polyaromatic hydrocarbons.

* Reducing radiation from X-rays and other medical sources.

The report singled out three chemicals as dangerous: formaldehyde, benzene and radon.

Almost all homes contain formaldehyde, considered a probable human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency. Formaldehyde is used in plywood, particle board, foam insulation, carpet and draperies, furniture, permanent press fabrics and toiletries. Exposure is highest when these are newly installed, the report said. Also, an estimated 2 million Americans are exposed to formaldehyde at work, raising their risk of dying from Hodgkin's lymphoma and other cancers, according to the report.

Exposure to benzene is also widespread. Exhaust from cars and other vehicles contain benzene, listed as a known human carcinogen by the EPA.

Radon, which forms naturally and can collect in homes, is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, behind smoking, resulting in an estimated 21,000 deaths annually, according to the report. The report recommends periodically checking the radon levels at home.

The President's Cancer Panel was created in 1971. Serving with Lefall is Margaret L. Kripke of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. The panel's third member has not been appointed.

I have permission to use the Yoga Journal photos and instructions in my column as long as I do not charge you a fee to read it, but they did not have this pose in their catalog. So, I need to send you elsewhere for instructions. You GOTTA try this terrific pose!
