Ski News
It's the new year and Utah's ski resorts are thoroughly blanketed by several feet of new snow. The MLK holiday is behind us and we're looking ahead toward President's Day weekend -- two of Utah's biggest ski weekends. But, skiing between these holidays will get you shorter lift lines, along with better rates and room selection at local hotels.
Please enjoy your January 2010 edition of Utah Ski Corner, powered by Ski 'N See. Thank you for being a friend of Ski 'N See, Utah Skis, and/or Skis On Wheels.
We'll see you on the slopes! |

Conci... Concier.. Conci-airge??
The hotel concierge is one of the most overlooked services a hotel offers. Perhaps it's because many people don't know what they do or think the service will cost them. Or, maybe it's because a lot of people just can't pronounce the word and feel too intimidated to look into it further.
Here's a short list of what a concierge can do for you:
-
Recommend and make reservations for local restaurants, attractions, concerts, theatres, spas, salons, private shopping, etc.
-
Provide access/tickets to some places and events that can be hard to get into
-
Arrange transportation
-
Arrange for ski school lessons and ski rental gear
-
Have flowers delivered or stage surprise events
-
Make referrals to suppliers, shops, services
While a concierge won't cover the cost of events, there is no charge for the concierge's service. A gratuity, based on difficulty of request, is appropriate; maybe $20+ for getting reservations at a booked restaurant or sold out concert. However, for simple reservations or information no gratuity is necessary.

You CAN Have it All... in One Spot
When travelers on a budget weigh cost versus amenities, many often feel they need to cut their lodging to a bare bones hotel. However, many don't realize that in the end they are spending more money on transportation and the unknown when trying to cover their needs by shopping for restaurants and other amenities around town. Here are a few things to consider when looking for lodging that has most all your needs in one place.
-
Shuttle service to and from the airport, as well as to local restaurants, ski shops, etc.
-
Restaurant on site; at least one is good, but better if there's also a little café for quick stops
-
Gift shop / convenience store - for all those forgotten needs
-
Spa and/or salon; If you want to pamper yourself, you may get a package deal with a facility on-site
-
Fitness room; save time and money from traveling to an outside facility
- A hotel with connections for discounts on local ski rentals, lift tickets, etc.

| Tip of the Ski - Need a Hand in Choosing Ski Gloves?
It seems like such a simple thing.. picking a pair of gloves that will keep your hands warm and possibly match your jacket. That is, until you get up on a lift and the tips of your fingers feel numb or sting from the cold so bad you want to cut them off... or maybe at least end your ski day early. Three things you want to consider: insulation, ventilation, and water proofing. Your regular cotton gloves won't cut it on the slopes. Although mittens can make you feel like all thumbs, it's one of the best options for warmth -- sharing the body heat between your fingers. Otherwise, go for gloves with a band and a cuff. One keeps the snow out the other keeps your wrist warm. Make sure you get a material that's sturdy enough to handle the beating from carrying your gear. Leather is good, as well as gloves with leather webbing between the fingers. Fit is key: Make sure your gloves fit snuggly, but don't cut circulation at all. Gloves that are too large make it hard to function. Try several pairs on to see if you can maneuver like you should. And, gloves that are too large can leave room for a very cold pocket of air at the tip of your fingers. Try glove liners if yours have a little too much wiggle room. Hand warmers are handy (pun intended), but don't do much for the fingers, so make sure the glove fits right. |
