Thanks to all that Utah has to offer in the way of of mountain ranges, snowfall, and powder conditions most people expect that all Utahns live in the great outdoors all winter long. Surprisingly some miss out and that's what Learn a Snow Sport Month is all about, getting people to try a sport that might have seemed intimidating or just too downright cold to try.

Getting outfitted in the right cold weather clothing takes care of the temperature issue. For the future snow sports enthusiasts, Ski Utah works with local resorts, state parks, and activity centers. The program helps provide affordable lessons and passes to get people learning how to enjoy the snow. Rather than just shoveling, they can now learn to ski, snowboard, cross country ski, snowshoe, ice skate or even snow kite!

Utah's ski industry tops the local news fairly often between November and April each year. Whether the headlines focus on Learn a Snow Sport Month, newly discovered Olympic-level athletes, or avalanche safety, you'll hear or read a lot about the Wasatch Mountain Range on a regular basis. Ski 'N See is now focusing the news you need to know in one area.

Ski 'N See launched its Mountain Media pages this month. On the news page you will find local news for those who live in Utah or plan to travel to the state for a ski vacation. The page also features news stories mentioning Ski 'N See, along with Ski 'N See press releases and archived newsletters.

The rest of Mountain Media brings to life the history of Ski 'N See, photos of the staff and events, how-to videos and space for future photo and video contests. The first photo contest is set for January and will offer some great prizes. Click the Mountain Media icon to take a look.

Convenient and Sweet Ski Town

With three world-class resorts located within two miles of each other, getting around Park City is just as easy as getting there. For one, many people don't realize that once arriving in Park City there's no need to rent a car. Many condominiums and private homes are located on or near the free town-wide shuttle or within walking distance to the slopes. Sweet!

There are many reasons -- beyond Sundance, the cool pubs, and the restaurants -- that people choose Park City as a ski destination.
  • Convenient: Just 35 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport via one major interstate.
  • Sweet: Free town-wide shuttle conveniently services all three resorts and Main Street all day and into the late evening/early morning.
  • Convenient: Access the slopes at Park City Mountain Resort directly from Main Street via The Town Lift.
  • Sweet: Park City Lodging, Inc. manages properties throughout Park City including lower Main Street for quick and convenient access to The Town Lift.

Now is the time to take advantage of another perfect Utah ski season without the added expense of staying right at the resort. Staying in a hotel in the Salt Lake Valley gives people the convenience they love of being within 25 - 35 minutes of 10 Utah ski resorts, and the added options for aprés ski with dozens of restaurants within a 2 minute drive or 15 minutes to downtown Salt Lake City. The staff at the Residence Inn - Sandy is experienced in helping their guests get the most out of their ski vacation, from guiding them to the best convenient shops for gear, to laying out the easiest route to their favorite resorts, and helping them enjoy their evenings.

Some tips you may want to consider:
  • Rent your equipment to save baggage fees and to get the gear you need for Utah snow. Perhaps just carry your boots.
  • Stay in a suite rather than a regular hotel room. There are significant savings to be had by doing some of all of your own cooking in your room versus eating out for each meal.
  • Consider the area you will be in staying in before you book. Is there shopping, movies, and restaurants close by? Staying a few miles off of the ski hill can vastly improve your options of things to do in the evenings and gives your non-skier friends reason to come with you.

Tip of the Ski - Timing Your Trip

Click here to visit Ski 'N See's snow reportDeciding when and how long to take a ski vacation can bring up many factors, from personal schedules and budgets to holidays and snow conditions. As you might expect, making mid-week ski plans during early or late season dates can lead to significant savings in lodging and transportation rates. Many resorts also offer discounted passes for off-peak ski days. You also want to consider what's going on in the ski town to avoid longer lift lines. Holidays -- especially when a long weekend off work is involved -- tend to draw the biggest crowds. Events like Sundance Film Festival may draw big crowds to Park City and rates may be higher there at that time. A great option, however, is to stay in the Salt Lake Valley for cheaper rates and drive up to Park City to enjoy very short lift lines, as everyone is busy movie watching and star gazing. At that time the Cottonwood Canyons are also a very good option for saving some cash and waiting time. You may also want to consider domestic Winter Olympic schedules if you're traveling with a group. Many buses are sent off to work the Olympics when it's in the U.S. and finding transportation may be tricky... and costly.
