Ski News
It may be Halloween, but we have a haunting feeling that the ski season is nearly upon us! Utah has already seen several days of snow and it's staying cold enough to keep a good base.
We hope you enjoy this second season for Utah Ski Corner, powered by Ski 'N See. As a friend of Ski 'N See, Utah Skis, and/or Skis On Wheels we would like to bring you informative news from the travel and ski industry once each month during the ski season. We only ask you for two things: pray or cross your fingers for big dumps this year and hit the forward link at the bottom to share our great news and deals with your friends!
Thanks for being a friend of Ski 'N See! |

To Rent or To Carry? How baggage fees might affect your ski trip
Ever wonder how much the airlines would charge for money bags? For those able to carry around this type of luggage, this year's increased baggage fees would not be an issue. Unfortunately for the rest of the world this might mean making some hard choices and major sacrifices. It's wonderful to be able to take your own skis wherever you plan to hit the slopes, but lugging the gear this year won't be the only inconvenience. Take a look at some of the fees you could face in bringing those boots and skis or snowboard onboard.
These airlines charge $20 for the first bag, $30 for the second each way for domestic flights:
American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United
Your first bag on Jet Blue is free, the second is $30 each way for domestic flights. Southwest does not charge for the first two bags.
Note: These prices were taken directly from each airline's website on Oct 29. 2009, based on their sizes for acceptable baggage. Oversized/overweight bags will likely cost more. Some airlines offer discounts for pre-paid baggage fees and there are a few exceptions to the fees for some first class passengers, active military personnel, etc. Check with each airline for details. |
Utah's Most Serendipitous Snow Lovers
The bell rings and kids scramble out of class on their way to another. Not in Utah schools, not on certain days during the ski season. Thanks to programs in place in both the Salt Lake Valley and in Park City, these kids are hopping on a bus with their best friends, and heading to a ski lesson for the day. Ski Utah's program actually offers skiing or boarding at all of Utah's resorts, adding up to 39 free days!
Stein Erickson, a major proponent of youth winter sports, once called Park City "the wonderful playground that is our back yard.
Take a look at the links below for more on what each area organization is offering Utah's kids. If you have kids participating in these programs, you'll need to get them gear. Don't miss out on Ski 'N See's amazing season rental offers for those growing feet!

Catering to the Cottonwoods with a Special Announcement
Utah is home of "The Greatest Snow on Earth" and there's plenty of reason for that, including this new reason: The recent cold temperatures and early snowfall across the Wasatch are making it possible for Solitude Ski Resort to open ahead of schedule on November 6, 2009. In fact, the resort is opening Link Lift for one day only on Halloween Day October 31, 2009 officially kicking off the 2009-2010 Utah Winter Season.
Skiing Magazine's Fall 2009 Ski Resort Rankings are in and Utah did NOT win Best Nightlife. "That's okay," says Kevin Roberts of Mountain West Ski Tours. "The Cottonwood Canyon Resorts represented a top 10 finish in all other categories, including: #4 for Best Overall; #3 for Backcountry Access; #2 for Steeps; and of course #1 for Best Snow." Roberts -- who has owned and operated a property management company in Utah catering to skiers for 12 years -- says though it's not known for it, the Salt Lake Valley does actually offer a good variety of après ski nightlife.

| Tip of the Ski - Prepare your body for the season
If you're the type to enjoy the bunny hill on a warm day, spend some time in the lodge, and create a social adventure out of your ski day, you may not need too much preparation. But, if you want to do all you can to help avoid injury at any level, you may want to get in shape before you hit the slopes. It's no secret that your legs do most the work while skiing or snowboarding. Working up endurance by jumping rope, or jumping side to side, and doing squats and lunges (properly of course - no knees past the toes) is important, but don't forget about stretching. That goes for your back and upper body as well. Your back does a lot of twisting while skiing or riding. Beyond that, you need to prepare for falls - where you can really twist it up. Being flexible and strong can help. You also want to make sure you have safe equipment that is fitted and tuned properly and that your winter wear fits properly, isn't too tight and isn't so loose that it gets in your way.
