What Are We Up To This Week?

This week I will be in London training and then playing very hard on getting this blog up and running.

On the bowling front unfortunately my ankle isn't up to it and I had to stop playing as soon as I warmed up! Therefore back to the hospital for some advice!

Greetings!

Good Morning!

How are you?

I hope you had a great first week of 2010!

Here in the east we have had a lot of snow this week and my car is currently stuck on the drive and I can't get off of it. I was hoping to take my little boy to see a football game today but it is just too dangerous to make the trip so we shall stay in the warm. It is more important to me that we don't have an accident than it is to watch Norwich win a game of footy.

You may be thinking why did I just tell you that story? The answer is, what is more important to you? I was chatting with a lady on Thursday who was pulling herself to bits because she had been out for dinner with her husband for their anniversary and 'blown' her diet. The reality was that it was more important to her to have some quality time with her husband and celebrate their wedding than it was to reduce her weight.

I always wanted to be slim but it was more important to me to get emotional benefit from food than it was to be slim, Therefore, I used to struggle to diet as the reality was I needed food as a sticky plaster and food was my friend! I used to say I didn't even really like food that much but that was fluff as I loved food and it was more important to me to have comfort through eating than it was to be slim....

This week's article is about the benefits of being big! I have covered this subject before but I want to specifically cover it this week and hopefully allow you to realise that there may be 'hidden' motivations that are keeping you stuck!

Before I leave this week I would love you to try a technique on yourself that someone reminded me about last night.

The next time you have a situation where you want to do something, for example, stick to your diet, but a little voice in your head jumps in to remind you that you aren't good enough, you don't deserve it, you're useless or some other negative comment that really isn't helping, then notice where that voice is coming from in your head, and see if you recognise who's voice it is?

Is the voice your voice or somebody else's?

Once you have a clear idea of who it is and where it is in your head then it is time to change it...

What would happen if the voice changed so it sounded like Donald Duck?

Or Mickey Mouse?

What if the backing track to that voice was suddenly the Benny Hill theme?

Can you listen to that voice without laughing? or smiling?

Can you take the voice seriously anymore?

And on the premise the voice doesn't even exist in reality what if you just decided to laugh about it and chase it away.

I hope you have an amazing winter's Saturday and stay warm!

Cya Saturday (said in Donald Duck's voice)

What's The Benefit Of Being Big?

When I first got to goal weight I went to Tesco to take back a CD that I had bought for Ethan that wouldn't play. I stood at the customer services desk and asked for my money back as they didn't have anymore in stock.

The lady looked up and said that she wasn't prepared to give me back my money and would only issue a credit as she didn't believe the CD wouldn't play as there were no scratches on it and it looked fine.

It then hit me like a brick!

She was arguing with me!

Nobody argued with me when I was big, when a 25 stone bald headed guy asks for things he usually got them and suddenly I was 13 and a half stone and weak....

I had lost my strength!!

Now the reality of course was totally different as I am a lot stronger, fitter and more able now than I ever was then but it made me realise that there was a benefit of being big.

And there usually is for people. They just don't look for them, as people just assume that the only benefit would be to be slim!

When I work with people 1-2-1 I ask them three questions...

The first is, what is the benefit of being slim?....

(Feel free to come up with your answers at this point)

Now hopefully they have a load of answers to why they want to be slim! Otherwise they probably wouldn't have come in the first place. I also ask them to state the benefits in the positive which tends to restrict the list down.

So for example

I want to be slim so I don't die is not the best motivator.

But

I want to be slim so I can achieve my life dream of running ten marathons is much better!

After we have covered the benefits of being slim, then I ask them

What's the benefit of staying big?

I would say 90% of the time the immediate answer is 'There is no benefit in being big!'

Then after some negotiation it is a very high percentage of people who do get a benefit of being big. Now, for a lot of guys, including me, it was about being perceived to be tough and untouchable, but for a lot of ladies especially it is about being invisible and not noticed.

But it can be other things. I worked with a lady who's husband only liked big women and therefore the benefit of being big was that he then 'fancied' her more.

After that question I then ask 'What's the benefit of not being slim?'

And again usually people think I am mad but after a chat they tend to come out with all sorts of revelations.

I stood in a course once when I asked the question to a lovely lady and she said the benefit of not being slim was that then she wouldn't have an affair....

So turning this to you...

Have you got five minutes? Grab a pen and write the three questions

1. Stated in the positive, what's the benefit of being slim?
2. What's the benefit of being big?
3. What's the benefit of NOT being slim?

As always you can mail me with the answers if you wish or keep them to yourselves but it is through self discovery and smoking out the motivations and benefits of why you do what you do that you can then start to make changes.

Cya Saturday! :-)
