Believe You Can, Believe You Can't, Whichever Way You'll Be Right - Anon

| What Are We Up To This Week? |
Well I left my job yesterday which after 15 years was a sad occasion and hence lots of emotion but now I have some great new opportunities which I am really looking forward to.
Also I went on my Reiki weekend which was fantastic! It was such a relaxing, chilled out weekend and the trainer was fantastic! As we worked 1-2-1 with each other it was fascinating to compare his industry to mine and we had loads of common goals which was great.
If you fancy a relaxing weekend learning Reiki or just relaxing then I can't recommend it enough. Details at

Greetings!
Good Morning :-)
I hope you had a brilliant week and have something nice planned for this weekend.
This week's article is called lifestyle changes and is about what you need to start thinking about to actually be slim long term. The problem tends to be everyone focuses on losing weight and diets whereas that is actually a very short period of your life. The key thing is to plan far beyond that so that when you have got to your goal weight that you make real changes in your life and your eating to make sure you don't ever have to diet again.
Before I leave this week I spent last weekend on a Reiki training courses and absolutely loved it. When I was with the trainer we were chatting about the work he does and the work I do. He spends a lot of time working with people who have physical injuries whereas I obviously work in the field of weight management.
The interesting thing was that although he worked on the body whereas I worked on the mind he said to me 'If people believe they can do something then they will, if they believe it is hard and difficult then they won't do, so it's all down to what they think'.
This really made me smile as I when I was dieting my mantra was 'Believe you can, believe you can't, whichever way you'll be right'. Because the thing is it doesn't matter what diet you choose, there are loads of diets out there and my advice to anyone is pick one which you like the taste of and fits in with your lifestyle. But any diet that reduces calories to less than your body needs will make your weight go down, therefore the key is what you believe, I spent 20 years believing I would fail on every diet I did because I was just 'big Mike' and destined to be that way, but then on a Thursday afternoon I decided to succeed instead and let nothing and nobody stand in my way. I smiled, I laughed, I looked only for the positives and that was now 3 and a half years ago and I haven't ever dieted since. Therefore my advice for you this week is BELIEVE YOU CAN....
Have a fantastic week and cya next Saturday
Mike ;-)

Lifestyle Change
|
A lot of people talk about how the key to being slim long term is lifestyle change and of course they are right. It is funny though that when you actually ask them what they mean by they either haven't actually come up with a plan or they just say 'I need to eat more healthy food and go to a gym'
Now usually as they say that there face looks really sad as they think they are going to eat sawdust and salad forever, and have to go to the gym every day or run round their neighbourhood if they have any chance of staying slim.
The problem is though that you will eat 'bad' food again, you will have weeks when you are so busy you can't do loads of exercise and therefore you need to make a mindset change on lifestyle.
A perfect example is a friend of mine who joined a gym back in February, he was telling me he was going to go every morning before work and as he was telling me you could see he didn't want to. I asked him whether he enjoyed going and he said no but it wasn't a problem. When I asked him how he was getting on a month later he said he had been three times and then cancelled his membership shortly afterwards.
Therefore lifestyle change there didn't work as he tried to force it based on what he thought he should do. Now I had that, I joined a gym and hardly ever went because (SHOCK HORROR!) I actually don't enjoy going to a gym! I find it very boring standing on a treadmill watching a flashing red dot go around a circle. Therefore instead I play football, go bowling, walk down on the beach and generally get much more active than I used to when I was big. I always at work go and pick guests up from main reception as opposed to send my secretary, I race Ethan up stairs instead of using lifts and escalators and hence I have made lifestyle changes that actually fit in with my lifestyle and because I am happy to do it because I enjoy them then I keep doing them.
And it's exactly the same with food choice, when I go to Starbucks with Jo I like their blueberry cheesecake but I also like their skinny ginger muffins. Now because I don't mind which I have because I enjoy both of them equally then 90% of the time I have the healthier option. The key thing is though is that I don't feel deprived by having the muffin.
So if you are looking at long term slimness and don't want to continue to yo-yo and jump on and off a diet then you need lifestyle changes that you are actually happy to do. If you don't like salad or rice cakes then don't eat them! If you think a Big Mac is ten out of ten in terms of taste then you need to find another less 'junky' food that also gives you ten out of ten. The key is not to feel like you are always having 2nd best...as you deserve the best!
I was talking to Jo a few weeks ago about exercise as she wants to get fit and tone up a bit and was talking about going back to a gym but she admitted she hated them, after a short chat she decided she wanted to play netball as she loved that at school, and therefore she has joined a local netball team and plays on a Monday night. Now the absolute key thing is that she LOVES to do it and therefore will continue to play for fun, with the benefit being that she can get fit and toned while she has fun.
Turning this to you then, what lifestyle changes are you going to make? And not the 'I am going to eat healthy and do more exercise' as that is so vague it is a dream and not a plan.
People can spend ages writing their shopping list to go to the supermarket each week but when did you last sit down with a pad and a pen and actually write out a plan of what you are going to change in your life to allow you to be slim (and happy!). Spend more time on coming up with a plan for your life and you will find that you start creating it, as my best friend says 'If you don't know where your going you are never going to get there!'
Anyway as always have an amazing week
Mike :-)
