Greetings!

I hope you had an amazing week and have something nice planned for this summers weekend.

This week's article is called 'the mirror' and is for people who start a diet because of what they see in the mirror, shop window or photograph and are horrified and therefore go on a diet.

The problem with this type of motivation is that it is almost always doomed to failure. This article explains why and what you can do instead.

Before I leave this week I need to talk Starbucks! Now I am a major fan of Starbucks mainly because Jo and I go and grab a coffee in there and relax and chat about nothing much while playing on our iPhones. For me, Starbucks is all about relaxation as opposed to all the food that they sell.

Anyway, this week I went for lunch with a good friend who is very overweight. We bought coffee, I had a black americano and he ordered a caramel machiatto drink with loads of caramel sauce and full fat milk.

I asked him why he didn't have a skinny (low fat) version of it and he replied that if he didn't have full fat milk or all the caramel drizzle then it was less value for money!

It occured to me that I used to run the same logic. If I ordered something then I would want all the extras and also have all of it. It was more about making sure I got value out of something as opposed to whether it was what I wanted or enjoyed.

So turning this to you? Why do you order large drinks or large popcorns at the cinema? Is it because that is the amount you want or is it simply because it is better value?

Anyway have an amazing week and cya early on Saturday

The Mirror

A lot of dieters will start a diet because of how they look. They will see themselves in the mirror, or in a shop window or a photograph and decide that enough is enough and they want to lose weight.

The motivation at that time is huge to lose weight as you are so tired of what you see that you want to be different.

Therefore, you do really well on a diet for a while but as you get slimmer, the motivation gets less and less and eventually you just stop the diet and go back to your old ways and put the weight back on...

Sound familiar? It is incredibly common....

Imagine you are in a bank and a bank robber pulls out a gun...the motivation to get away from him as you stand there would be huge...but when you reach the door of the bank the motivation, although still high, would be slightly less...and when you were three streets away from the bank, the motivation would be even less to keep running as the motivation lessens all the time. So imagine yourself  50 miles away from the bank!! What is the motivation now for getting away?

Losing weight because of the mirror is exactly this problem. I had a lady a few years back who wanted to reduce her weight by 12 stone because she saw herself in the mirror in a supermarket and was totally horrified.

She was one of the most motivated ladies I have ever met and reduced her weight down brilliantly until she had lost around 6 stone and suddenly started to plateau and eat more and more until she stopped losing weight.

The reason was that the motivation was no longer there. She was no longer the person who she saw in the mirror in the supermarket and although she wasn't yet slim, she was far enough away from the big person she was that suddenly it wasn't as important.

You can tell dieters that run this motivation as they carry a picture round of the big them! They are comparing how different they are to the original motivator for being slim.

This lady who reduced six stone admitted that it just wasn't as important anymore and therefore she wanted to eat more and consequently, not lose weight.

Are you running this motivation? Are you wanting to be slim because you don't like who you are now? Do you look in the mirror and want to not be that person?

If the answer is yes then don't use it as a motivator!! I promise you that the more you lose the less you will want to finish the job off.

Instead, and this is key, what do you want instead of being overweight? If you want to be slim because of all the good stuff that brings then focus on that instead. For me, I wanted to be slim to have an amazing holiday and therefore the more weight I reduced the closer I was to having my holiday and so the motivation was actually getting stronger all the time.

So what do you want to be slim for? Is it towards a prize or getting away from something you see in the mirror?

The key to motivation is to be doing it for a prize, and more importantly having a prize that really motivates you.....

GO FOR IT!
