When I work 1-2-1 with people I am always very interested in what their real goal is. You would assume that everyone has the same goal, but that isn't true.
Read this list of goals regarding weight.
1. I want to lose weight
2. I want to be slim
3. I want to be healthy
4. I want to be happy
Now they are all exactly the same thing surely? I mean everyone wants to lose weight, be slim and healthy and ultimately be happy so all sounds good.
So which of those goals do you set yourself when you start a diet? When you think about weight are you thinking about being slim forever or are you thinking about quickly losing weight for an event.
When I dieted it was all about wanting to lose weight at the start, it was about losing weight because I didn't want to diet, didn't want to urinate blood anymore, didn't want to have chest pains and therefore was all about what I didn't want.
Then I changed my mindset during the diet to what I did want. I wanted to be slim! Therefore suddenly it was about what I did want which was to go on holiday and go on loads of rides and experience new things.
But then, was I actually healthy? Well certainly I was slim but health is a different thing to being slim. For me, healthy meant then, and still does now, looking after myself, that incorporates exercise, and eating good quality, nutritious foods, and generally keeping myself in good health. One of my best friends is slim but eats a huge amount of saturated fat as he loves pizza and kebabs, therefore, is he truly healthy?
And finally, of course, happy! I have said before about the fantasy that slim means happy. If you are happy, and by happy I mean whatever "happy" means to you, then you tend to value your health highly and therefore you are slim because of that.
The point of this article is to make you think what your goal is. If I had my time again, I would have set a goal of being happy! Because if you have that goal and work and plan towards it then what you'll find is that the behaviour of overeating will stop anyway as you won't need the emotional boost that food gives you if you are happy being you!
I got big because I used food to relieve boredom and give comfort. If I was actually happy then I wouldn't need food as a sticky plaster for those situations, and "losing weight" would have happened anyway.
So what's your goal? Your true goal? And what do you really need to change in your life to achieve it.. once you know will you actually make those changes...GO FOR IT!
Have a fantastic week
Mike :-)
