Greetings!   ,

Carbon Rule Campaign

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is moving forward to reduce carbon pollution from fossil fuel power plants and oil refineries, which produce nearly 40 percent of the global warming pollution in the United States. Have you joined us in sending a clear message to the EPA in support of their historic carbon pollution safeguards for new power plants?

Comments to the EPA will be accepted until June 25, 2012, so NOW is the time to act. Interfaith Power and Light has set up an easy on-line way to submit your support for these historic pollution safeguards. Please send in your comment of support to the EPA today! Click Here

Interfaith Power and Light (IPL) Annual Meeting

From April 30th to May 2nd 2012, OH IPL board members Bob Downs and Sr Paula Gonzlez attended the annual national IPL meeting in Washington. Convened by IPL founder and leader, The Rev Canon Sally Bingham, representatives from 38 state affiliates and the District of Columbia met in the Kellogg Conference Center at Gallaudet University under the banner of Growing our Impact.  Fed and housed in environmentally friendly confines the delegates compared notes on what worked and did not work in the individual state organizations, formed regional alliances for future campaigns, and heard national spiritual and conservation leaders describe the "state of the environmental union".

Highlights of the first two days included a discussion of recent EPA rule-making by the Deputy Administrator, Bob Perciasepe; a talk on climate perspectives by Climate War author Eric Pooley; and a review of current threats and opportunities in coal resourcing by the Director of the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign, Mary Anne Hitt. Practical sessions included workshops on current IPL national programs (Cool Harvest, Carbon Covenant, Preach-In & Cool Congregations), "best practices" for state affiliates, fund raising strategies and communications campaigns. Networking among delegates took place throughout the meeting and culminated with an Environmental Resources Expo where IPL members met representatives from over 20 national religious environmental initiatives and green resources to compare programs and explore possible opportunities for cooperative efforts.

Day 3 was Lobby Day as delegates converged on Capitol Hill to visit Congressional Offices and express faith-based concern for environmental challenges. Delegates advocated for passage of energy efficiency legislation proposed in Senate Bill S.1000 and House Bill H.R. 4017 and support of EPA rule-making under the Clean Air Act, especially related to mercury and carbon pollution as well as increased average automobile mileage [details of the IPL position at our website: http://www.ohipl.org/]. Paula and Bob visited with staffers of the two Ohio senators. Both offices responded favorably regarding the energy conservation efforts (Senator Portman is a co-sponsor); however, both were non-committal regarding the EPA rulemaking.

Uplifting and Heartfelt Blog Post!

Cool Congregations Logo

Our OhIPL board chair, Dr. Greg Hitzhusen has shared with us an inspirational reflection on the importance of uniting together and acting on our beliefs regarding climate change.

Dr. Hitzhusen writes,
"And so I challenge my students, and I challenge my fellow parents, husbands, children, and friends: if we are going to come together to succeed in our unlikely endeavors, to meet the challenges we face in handing down as good a world to our children as what we received from our parents, then we will need to find the inner courage, strength, and will to stand for the things we know are right. To actually live the way we believe we should. To deal with climate change and long-term questions of environmental sustainability, we will not likely suddenly see some single effort, or piece of legislation, or public works project whose struggle to the finish line will suddenly inspire us to stand up and rush together to some end point.
