Nurturing Fathers
Published in 2004, the research "Father Absence and Youth Incarceration" by Cynthia C. Harper of the University of California San Francisco and Sara S. McLanahan of Princeton University found the following:  "The results...show that, controlling for income and all other factors, youths in father-absent families (mother only, mother-stepfather, and relatives/other) still had significantly higher odds of incarceration than those from mother-father families."

Families First knows that fathers matter in the lives of their children--healthy adult father-child and healthy teen father-child relationships.

EDUCATIONAL FAILURE:  NPR AIRS FIVE-PART SERIES ON THE NATION'S SCHOOL DROPOUT CRISIS

NPR's five-part series on America's dropout crisis begins July 25.  On July 24, two features aired in preparation for the beginning of the series.  On July 25, NPR aired the first of the five stories.  The links below provide access to these features:

School Dropout Rates Add To Fiscal Burden (npr.org)

Nearly 1 million kids who start high school every year don't make it to graduation. At a time when federal and state budgets are tight, dropouts costs taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars in lost revenue, health care, welfare and incarceration costs.

SANCHEZ: A high school dropout, according to the latest statistics will earn $200,000 less than a high school graduate over his or her lifetime, and almost $1 million less than a college graduate. The unemployment rate for dropouts right now is anywhere from 15 to 18 percent; double what it is for high school graduates. It represents just an enormous loss of human potential.

Series Overview: The Cost Of Dropping Out (npr.org)

Of all the problems this country faces in education, one of the most complicated, heart-wrenching and urgent is the dropout crisis. Nearly 1 million teenagers stop going to school every year.

The impact of that decision is lifelong. And the statistics are stark:

- The unemployment rate for people without a high school diploma is nearly twice that of the general population.

-  Over a lifetime, a high school dropout will earn $200,000 less than a high school graduate and almost $1 million less than a college graduate.

-  Dropouts are more likely to commit crimes, abuse drugs and alcohol, become teenage parents, live in poverty and commit suicide.

-  Dropouts cost federal and state governments hundreds of billions of dollars in lost earnings, welfare and medical costs, and billions more for dropouts who end up in prison.

NPR is looking at the dropout crisis through the stories of five people. Three dropped out of school years ago. They talk about why they left school, the forces in their lives that contributed to that decision and its impact in the years since.

There are also profiles of two teenagers who are at risk of dropping out and the adults who are working hard to keep them in school.

From Drug Dealing To Diploma, A Teen's Struggle (npr.org)

No statistic in education is more damning than the nation's dropout rate. Almost 4 million students start ninth grade every year. One in four won't graduate.

About half of those who drop out every year are black. Most will end up unemployed, and by their mid-30s, six out of 10 will have spent time in prison. In Chicago, one young man dropped out, spent time in jail and is now getting a second chance.

SPIRITUAL WITNESS FOR CHILDREN
Prayer
One of the most important things faith communities can do for children is to pray for them.

Every child is a child of God and deserves justice and compassion. Every child deserves our prayers.

ICM encourages every faith community to become a spiritual witness for children. Hold a worship service in your church, synagogue, mosque or temple and invite others to join in praying for the well-being of all children.

ICM Mission and Goals

The Interfaith Children's Movement (ICM) is an interfaith, grassroots, advocacy movement dedicated to improving the well-being of children in Georgia.  ICM was formed in 2001 as an intentional association of individuals and communities of faith from all religious traditions.

The Interfaith Children's Movement strives to be a voice for all Georgia children, but especially the poor and marginalized whose voices are often unheard.

ICM works closely with Georgia's policy-oriented child advocacy organizations, such as:

These organizations help set the agenda for our work for children at the policy level.  ICM's faith community members provide a megaphone to the legislature about what needs to be done for children.
