Nurturing Fathers
Published in 2004, the research "Father Absence and Youth Incarceration" by Cynthia C. Harper of the University of California San Francisco and Sara S. McLanahan of Princeton University found the following:  "The results...show that, controlling for income and all other factors, youths in father-absent families (mother only, mother-stepfather, and relatives/other) still had significantly higher odds of incarceration than those from mother-father families."

Families First knows that fathers matter in the lives of their children--healthy adult father-child and healthy teen father-child relationships.

DISMANTLE GEORGIA'S SCHOOL TO PRISON PIPELINE

According to a recent report released by Georgia Appleseed on Georgia's school discipline policies and practices, in 2006, (latest data available) Georgia had the 10th highest suspension rate of public school students in the country. High suspension rates have been identified as one of the leading factors of the trend called the "school to prison pipeline," by which children are funneled out of the public school system into the juvenile justice and criminal justice systems.

Georgia continues to struggle with making real progress in increasing student achievement; raising its graduation rate; and reducing the number of school dropouts (an estimated 28,000 minority students each year drop out of Georgia's public schools).

The wholesale educational failure of thousands of children is both a moral and economic dilemma.  ICM continues its call for the full involvement of the interfaith community in addressing this pressing issue that is crushing the futures of thousands of Georgia's children, especially poor and impoverished children; children with special needs; and children of color.

ICM co-chairs, along with the Atlanta Community Engagement Team (ACET), the School Dropout Prevention Task Group of the Strengthening Families and Communities Coalition.  This task group works with schools, service providers, parents and community organizations to reduce the number of dropout factories in metro Atlanta and to promote an increase in the number of quality afterschool programs in the most negatively-affected areas.

Be a part of the solution.  Attend the next Strengthening Families and Communities Coalition meeting, Wednesday, July 27, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the World Trade Center Atlanta, 303 Peachtree Street, NE, Lower Lobby Suite 100, Atlanta, Georgia 30308-3252.

SPIRITUAL WITNESS FOR CHILDREN
Prayer
One of the most important things faith communities can do for children is to pray for them.

Every child is a child of God and deserves justice and compassion. Every child deserves our prayers.

ICM encourages every faith community to become a spiritual witness for children. Hold a worship service in your church, synagogue, mosque or temple and invite others to join in praying for the well-being of all children.

ICM Mission and Goals

The Interfaith Children's Movement (ICM) is an interfaith, grassroots, advocacy movement dedicated to improving the well-being of children in Georgia.  ICM was formed in 2001 as an intentional association of individuals and communities of faith from all religious traditions.

The Interfaith Children's Movement strives to be a voice for all Georgia children, but especially the poor and marginalized whose voices are often unheard.

ICM works closely with Georgia's policy-oriented child advocacy organizations, such as:

These organizations help set the agenda for our work for children at the policy level.  ICM's faith community members provide a megaphone to the legislature about what needs to be done for children.
