JUDGE THRASH BLOCKS PARTS OF NEW GA IMMIGRATION LAW (HB 87)

From Atlanta (CNN) 6/27/2011 -- A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction Monday temporarily blocking parts of a new Georgia law that aims to crack down on illegal immigration.

The law, known as HB 87, was scheduled to go into effect Friday.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash Jr.'s ruling blocks enforcement of two controversial sections of the law.

"State and local law enforcement officers and officials have no authorization to arrest, detain or prosecute anyone based upon Sections 7 and 8 of HB 87 while this injunction remains in effect," Thrash ruled.

Those sections of the law would allow police to ask about immigration status when questioning suspects in certain criminal investigations.

They also would allow the imposition of prison sentences for people who knowingly transport illegal immigrants during the commission of a crime, and workers convicted of using fake identification to get jobs could be sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined $250,000.

SPIRITUAL WITNESS FOR CHILDREN
Prayer
One of the most important things faith communities can do for children is to pray for them.

Every child is a child of God and deserves justice and compassion. Every child deserves our prayers.

ICM encourages every faith community to become a spiritual witness for children. Hold a worship service in your church, synagogue, mosque or temple and invite others to join in praying for the well-being of all children.
ICM Mission and Goals

The Interfaith Children's Movement (ICM) is an interfaith, grassroots, advocacy movement dedicated to improving the well-being of children in Georgia.  ICM was formed in 2001 as an intentional association of individuals and communities of faith from all religious traditions.

The Interfaith Children's Movement strives to be a voice for all Georgia children, but especially the poor and marginalized whose voices are often unheard.

ICM works closely with Georgia's policy-oriented child advocacy organizations, such as:

These organizations help set the agenda for our work for children at the policy level.  ICM's faith community members provide a megaphone to the legislature about what needs to be done for children.
