The next session in the series of Interfaith Children's Movement's (ICM) Children's Issues and Advocacy forums will focus on Immigration.  The forum will take place Thursday, May 26, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and will be held at Central United Methodist Church, 501-7 Mitchell Street, SW, Atlanta, 30314.  We will have registration and a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m.

The focus of this session is on the state of immigrant children or children in immigrant families in GA; and how the new immigration reform law (HB 87) affects the abilities of faith communities and community organizations to serve the immigrant community.

There will be a panel discussion at 9:30 a.m. with State House Minority Leader Rep. Stacey Abrams and others.  At 11:00 a.m., Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) will present "A Simple Analysis HB 87."  There will also be advocacy training to help faith communities and community organizations understand how to become effective advocates.

For such a time as this, ICM is seeking the voices of the interfaith community.  We hope that you will agree to join us on May 26 to learn the facts and move forward together with a unified response in addressing this issue.

BE A REFUGEE FAMILY SERVICES
YOUTH SUMMER CAMP ANGEL

Each year, the RFS Summer Youth Camp provides a safe place for 56 refugee students in grades 1-8 to learn and have fun.. During the eight-week experience, kids spend their days learning and playing, with activities like D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read), swimming, music and the arts, team sports, community service, and field trips to sites and experiences across the city.

For parents, RFS Summer Youth Camp provides peace of mind: they know that their child is in a safe, positive, nurturing environment. In addition, the free program is a critically-needed resource for families struggling financially. With your support, we can help meet the overwhelming need for a safe, supportive, fun summer experience for Atlanta's refugee youth.

SPIRITUAL WITNESS FOR CHILDREN
Prayer
One of the most important things faith communities can do for children is to pray for them.

Every child is a child of God and deserves justice and compassion. Every child deserves our prayers.

ICM encourages every faith community to become a spiritual witness for children. Hold a worship service in your church, synagogue, mosque or temple and invite others to join in praying for the well-being of all children.
ICM Mission and Goals

The Interfaith Children's Movement was formed in 2001 as an intentional association of individuals and communities of faith from all religious traditions.

The Interfaith Children's Movement strives to be a voice for all Georgia children, but especially the poor and marginalized whose voices are often unheard.

ICM works closely with Georgia's policy-oriented child advocacy organizations, such as:
  • Voices for Georgia's Children,
  • The Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic at Emory University,
  • Georgia Appleseed,
  • JUSTGeorgia,
  • Prevent Child Abuse Georgia and
  • A Future.Not a Past. (child prostitution prevention).

These organizations set the agenda for our advocacy work for children.

ICM's faith community members provide a megaphone to the legislature about what needs to be done for children.

MEDICAID PROPOSAL COULD COST GA BILLIONS OF FEDERAL DOLLARS

3:45 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2011

A GOP proposal to transform Medicaid into a block grant program could cost Georgia billions of dollars in projected federal spending, which some groups fear will cut access to health care for thousands of the state's neediest residents.

The state could see a $47.6 billion cut in federal funding from 2012 to 2021 if the new health care law is repealed and Medicaid became a block grant, a recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation's Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured shows.  Read more...

7200 Steps AFNAP

On October 1, 2011, join A Future. Not A Past. (AFNAP) for our 2nd Annual "7200 Steps to Stop Demand" 5k Run/Walk to stop the demand for prostituted children in Georgia.  Did you know that 7,200 men knowingly or unknowingly pay for sex with adolescent females each month in Georgia?

Spearheaded by the Juvenile Justice Fund, AFNAP's mission is to disable demand by supporting the prosecution of the pimps and johns who make the prostitution of children a gruesome reality in our community.  We are calling all community members to join us as we take Steps to Stop demand to ensure that not one child falls victim to this most heinous form of child abuse.
