ICM ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

At this annual meeting, ICM will elect nominees for our board of directors and explore "The State of Immigrant Children and Families in Georgia." After presentations from our guest speakers, a discussion session will be held on how the faith community can become part of the solution in helping children of immigrant families.

STOP CHILD SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AND TRAFFICKING
U.S. Senate Bill (S. 2925) - Trafficking Deterrence and Victims Support Act of 2009 passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on August 5. U.S. House of Representatives Bill (H.R. 5575) - Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Deterrence and Victims Support Action of 2010 is scheduled to be heard in the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime on September 15. More House members need to sign-on in support of the bill to ensure it passes through committee. Find out who your U.S. House Representative is and ask him/her to support and co-sponsor H.R. 5575. |
JUVENILE JUSTICE MATTERS:
HEARINGS ON JUVENILE CODE REFORM CONTINUE
If you are interested in the well-being of children, then you must take an interest in the effort to reform Georgia's juvenile code. The next hearing on The Child Protection and Public Safety Act will focus on Article 7-Delinquency and is scheduled for Thursday, September 30, from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. in Room 450 of the Capitol. As a member of the JUSTGeorgia Coalition, ICM calls upon all faith communities to help ensure that this legislation stays on track. Please contact your state legislators and let them know that you support SB 292 - The Child Protection and Public Safety Act, JUSTGeorgia and the need for juvenile code reform. If your state senator sits on the Senate Judiciary Juvenile Code Rewrite Sub-Committee, please call and ask him/her to attend the hearing. GEORGIA TAX REFORM COUNCIL HOLDS MEETINGS ACROSS THE STATE
The Tax Reform Council is currently meeting to recommend state tax law changes to the legislature. The council is comprised of businesses representatives, economists and out-going Governor Sonny Perdue. This council will play an important role in shaping the debate moving forward. They will issue their recommendations to the General Assembly for a vote when it reconvenes in January 2011. Georgia's children have a vested interest in the outcome of these discussions. Let your voice be heard on behalf of Georgia's children. A few basic facts:- Georgia's current tax structure is out-dated.
- This recession, the most severe recession since the Great Depression, has exposed Georgia's tax structure to be unsustainable and unbalanced.
- Georgia's tax structure was developed in the 1930s and doesn't account for today's economy.
- Tax loopholes, credits, and exemptions have been expanded at the expense of adequately funding services.
- Important services, such as education and health care, which are critical to our children's future and key to our state's recovery are being compromised.
- We need real solutions that invest in families, communities and our state's prosperity.
- Tax reform must preserve our communities by maintaining basic funding for essential services like schools, health care, and public safety and protect working families as they struggle to make ends meet. Please read the "Why Tax Reform Matters" fact sheet from 2020 Georgia for additional information. Also, mark your calendar to attend one of the remaining council meeting dates listed below.

SPIRITUAL WITNESS FOR CHILDREN |
One of the most important things faith communities can do for children is to pray for them.
Every child is a child of God and deserves justice and compassion. Every child deserves our prayers.
ICM encourages every faith community to become a spiritual witness for children. Hold a worship service in your church, synagogue, mosque or temple and invite others to join in praying for the well-being of all children. |
ICM Mission and Goals
The Interfaith Children's Movement was formed in 2001 as an intentional association of individuals and communities of faith from all religious traditions.
The Interfaith Children's Movement strives to be a voice for all Georgia children, but especially the poor and marginalized whose voices are often unheard.
ICM works closely with Georgia's policy-oriented child advocacy organizations, such as:

ICM's faith community members provide a megaphone to the legislature about what needs to be done for children.
