UPCOMING ICM EVENTS:
ICM in Cobb Meeting
When: Thursday, August 19, 2010, 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
Join us for our ICM in Cobb meeting on August 19. The featured presenter will be Street GRACE, "a non-denominational alliance of churches, community partners, and volunteers dedicated to supporting, enlarging, and allying with those individuals and organizations working toward eliminating the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC)."
ICM Annual General Meeting
When: Tuesday, August 31, 2010, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
At this annual meeting, ICM will explore "The State of Immigrant Children and Families in Georgia" and, after presentations from our guest speakers, hold a discussion session on how the faith community can become part of the solution in helping children of immigrant families.
Guest Speakers:
Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director, GALEO (Georgia Association of Latino-Elected Officials)
In June, the Sapelo Foundation released a ground-breaking white paper on the impact of immigration enforcement on Latino children in Georgia.
A July 29 article in the AJC reported that Georgia has "the ninth-largest immigrant segment in the United States ," with estimates of "one million foreign-born residents."
Today (August 12), the US Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) Atlanta District and Atlanta Field Office hosted a special training seminar "Immigration Options for Children at Risk: Special Immigrant Juvenile VISAs & Victims of Crimes and Human Trafficking." This training was for persons who work with and advocate for immigrant children to provide them with the technical knowledge "to identify and assist children who have been abused, neglected, victimized or abandoned and to help these children regain stability, safety and permanency."
As you can see, immigration is a growing issue in Georgia. The question is how does the collective faith community respond to some of the most vulnerable children in our midst? We know that children who are unprotected are subject to all of the abuses that society has to offer. As faith communities, we are called to protect the vulnerable among us. Join us on August 31 and take part in this critical effort to mobilize Georgia's interfaith community in committing to sound, humanitarian solutions and actions to serving our children of immigrant families. |

SPIRITUAL WITNESS FOR CHILDREN |
One of the most important things faith communities can do for children is to pray for them.
Every child is a child of God and deserves justice and compassion. Every child deserves our prayers.
ICM encourages every faith community to become a spiritual witness for children. Hold a worship service in your church, synagogue, mosque or temple and invite others to join in praying for the well-being of all children. |
ICM Mission and Goals
The Interfaith Children's Movement was formed in 2001 as an intentional association of individuals and communities of faith from all religious traditions.
The Interfaith Children's Movement strives to be a voice for all Georgia children, but especially the poor and marginalized whose voices are often unheard.
ICM works closely with Georgia's policy-oriented child advocacy organizations, such as:
-
Voices for Georgia's Children,
-
The Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic at Emory University,
-
Georgia Appleseed,
-
JUSTGeorgia,
-
Prevent Child Abuse Georgia and
-
A Future.Not a Past. (child prostitution prevention).
These organizations set the agenda for our advocacy work for children.
ICM's faith community members provide a megaphone to the legislature about what needs to be done for children.
