Bradrod Keeney Coming to the East Coast!
Dear Friends,Rachel facing to the side in CB hat

Winter is almost over in Virginia.  We haven't had much ice or snow. It has been more like  a prolonged autumn. Now, crocus and daffodils are already coming up in my garden.  In stark contrast, in the Siberian arctic, it is still deep winter.  In the Kalahari desert, it is the rainy season that turns the desert into a green oasis.  I think about these differences in climates because in this issue, I invite you to learn more about shaman of shaking medicine, Bradford Keeney, and explorer, Jon Turk.  Brad was initiated into the ecstatic shamanic practices of the Bushman of the Kalahari and wrote several books about it, including Bushman Shaman.  Jon undertook 5 expeditions to northeastern Siberia where he met 96-year-old shaman, Moolynaut.  Under the purview of MettaKnowledge for Peace and Shamanism in a New Age, I am bringing both to the East Coast  in April (see below for more information).

We are living in unprecedented times when the wisdom of indigenous peoples are being brought to our doorsteps by many courageous visionaries who often risked hardship,  illness and even possible death to be led by indigenous teachers into dimensions of experience often held in our society as taboo or labeled as "sorcery", "imagination" and even "extinct" for centuries. Since I am the type of person who likes to dig deeply into anything I am interested in, I have spent the past decade researching the new shamanism in the West.   I  have wanted to understand more about this synergy between the ancient and the new, the dynamic of oppression of the indigenous peoples by whites and the fascination with them and their cultures.

In this issue, I invite you to take a brief look at the history of the new shamanism and the new shamans and at how they took ancient wisdom traditions and distilled them into a form compatible with western sensibilities.  To read on, click here.

And read more from Jon about his own work and life experiences. I hope to see you at their lectures and/or workshops in April!

Warmly,

Rachel

Finding Magic
An Adventure with Jon Turk into Siberian Shamanism
A Lecture and Workshop in Charlottesville Virginia
Jon Turk in hat Shamans throughout the world call forth magic and heal suffering through dance, music, dreams, and communication with landscapes and animals. On Easter day, join explorer, Jon Turk, author of his forthcoming book, The Raven's Gift, in lovely rural Virginia as we explore magic-making through the shamanic spirituality of the Koryak people of northeastern Siberia.

Over 5 expeditions, Jon became friends with the Koryak people.  They retain many of their ancient shamanic customs. His experience of being healed of severe chronic pain from an old injury by shaman, Moolynaut radically changed his worldview.  Share with Jon the delight and magic he brings to us from the far reaches of Siberia.

Come join Jon for a lecture and booksigning and a day-long exploration of the magic of land and space.

Meeting the New Shamans
A Personal Reflection

I contacted explorer, Jon Turk after reading his 2008 article in the Shaman's Drum, "Reaching for Otherworlds: A Healing in Siberia."  In it, he described a healing he experienced by an old shaman named Moolynaut.  Many years before meeting her, his pelvis was reconstructed with metal bolts and plates after a skiing accident. He was told by doctors he would likely live with chronic and even debilitating pain for the rest of his life.  This fact did not deter him from continuing his lifelong passion for exploring some of the hardest and rarely trekked edges of the world.  On one of 5 expeditions to Siberia, he was once again struck by a bout of intense pain and was told by the villagers to go see Moolynaut. Bradford Keeney offers what is being called the wildest and most transformative teaching on Earth! Rather than talk about spirituality, growth, and change, he brings it forth. He hosts the presence of spirit and the birthing of previously unimagined creative possibilities. In his sessions, anything can happen. Quite literally, light bulbs have exploded, fire alarms have gone off, speakers have exploded, microphones have caught fire, and lightning has struck the building. More importantly, people have experienced radical transformations that point the way toward vibrant spirited living, initiating an exhilarating entry into one's destined journey.

Using music, rhythm, and what he calls "N/om Talk" (kundalini-inspired expression) and the "Life Force Theatre," Keeney steps out of the way and kicks open the door for spirit to enter. He has been called prophetic, raw, politically incorrect, controversial, and absolutely wild. He also has been called gentle, humorous, uncommonly and absurdly wise, therapeutic, and loving. Suffice it to say that he embraces the opposites, dances the contraries, and shines the light on the syncopated truths.

Prepare to be shocked, laugh yourself silly, get tripped over what used to be the ground of your being, and find freedom outside all the boxed views. Come rock, roll, shake, and bake the whole of your mind-body-heart-soul.  It is his privilege to introduce us to what he has learned about shaking medicine in this weekend workshop at the beautiful Menla Mountain Retreat Center in Phoenicia, New York.

DATES:  Thursday, April 2 starting at 6 p.m., Friday, April 3, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, April 4, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
