AWCNJ is a Winner
The Northern New Jersey Professional Chapter came away a winner at this year's national Association for Women in Communications conference in September. The chapter received the award for Most Innovative Membership Programming.

The award recognizes a chapter for outstanding membership recruitment and retention. 

"Receiving this award is a reflection of our commitment to provide meaningful programs that appeal to our members based on the ideas and suggestions we received from our member surveys," noted Co-President Carla Capizzi.

"As a volunteer organization, AWCNJ depends on its members to lend their time, energy and inspiration to supporting professional growth for fellow communicators," added Co-President Lynn McFarlane. "Thanks to the entire team."
Social Networking Tips from the AWC Conference

Speaking at the Association for Women in Communications national conference in September, Lena West asked a simple question about social networking: "Should you or your client do it?"

Founder and CEO of xnyoMedia Technology, West had a pretty straightforward answer. It depends, she said, on whether you or your staff has the time and what you hope to gain from it.

Before starting out, she explained, you need to know why you want to get involved, what you hope to accomplish, and what social networking platform will best allow you to reach your goals. For example, if your target audience consists of people on the go podcasts, and not blogs, are your best tools. She noted that social media does not replace existing communications efforts, but rather adds another layer.

A blogger for Entrepreneur and Fast Company, who also has accounts on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, West explained that her strategy is to schedule specific days and times when she updates each. She also uses each platform for a specific purpose. Her Facebook and Twitter accounts are largely for personal relationships, while she uses LinkedIn for professional networking, and blogs to promote her expertise. Working Matters
Kara Passage - E-zier than we think!
Shortly after graduating with an Art History degree and an internship in the Marketing and Communications Department at the Montclair Art Museum, I accepted an offer at the museum as Media Relations Coordinator. I had no previous experience designing websites or e-newsletters, and had to learn quickly. 

Fortunately, it is becoming easier and easier to develop basic skills in both. Instead of having a web developer on-site, many companies today use a template to design website pages - often as easy as Microsoft Word!  Today there are several e-marketing tools, such as ConstantContact, iContact, and boomerang, that have easy-to-use templates for sending hundreds to thousands of e-mails at a time.

The trick to website design is: Keep it simple and organized, and keep the content up-to-date and edited. Customers who are overwhelmed by your website might not return for a second visit! The same is true of e-newsletters and e-blasts: Keep the content cohesive, simple and to the point. 

My job has enabled me to think about ways to connect with the public using new technologies, instead of relying solely on newspapers, magazines, radio and television. Today, with easy-to-use templates and built-in tutorials, anyone can do it!
