Getting the Most Out of Networking
By Lianne
Schoenwiesner
|
Like anything else in business, networking will provide more
value if approached strategically and with focus. Sound cold and calculating? It needn't be!
Getting ready -
Exactly what value can you offer the folks you will meet? What value can they offer you? The more precisely you can personify yourself
and your business, the greater your impact will be. This can take the form of the infamous
"elevator speech," but make sure it doesn't sound too "canned" or impersonal.
Setting goals -
What do you want to achieve? Three new
clients? A supplier? A new perspective
on the market? Stay open to new
opportunities but don't lose focus.
Personal approach
- Ask questions and really listen to the person you are speaking with. It will make more of an impression than
anything else you can say. You will
learn how this person can be of value to you and vice versa. For those who are uncomfortable networking,
this has the added benefit of taking the focus off of you.
Follow up -
Unless you have a great memory, make brief notes about the people you
meet.Then think carefully about who
you'd like to connect with further. Be
selective enough that you will really have time to follow up. Then do it right away!

Birds of a Feather Flock Together
By Stephanie Daye

On Wednesday, July 16, more than 400 marketing and
communications professionals "flocked" to the 2008 NJ MarCom Council Joint
Summer Networking Event, held at The Olde Mill Inn in Basking Ridge. Sponsored
by myriad industry organizations, including our own Association for Women in Communications Northern New Jersey Professional Chapter, the event
offered attendees the rare opportunity to not only share their business with
others, but learn more about New Jersey professional organizations, network
with potential clients, and share their experiences with both veterans and
newcomers.
"You never know who you're going to meet," said Donna Coney
Island, who does voice over and camera talent freelance work.
Attendees enjoyed a buffet dinner and dessert, and a
complimentary cappuccino bar.
Exhibitors included: The Business Marketing Association
(BMA); MCA-I; The New Jersey American Marketing Association; NJ/IABC; ADCNJ;
MENG; The New Jersey Advertising Club; PRSA; and The Society of Competitive
Intelligence Professionals (SCIP).
Denise Barnwell of Transformation Marketing, LLC attended
after hearing about it from a colleague and was impressed by the diversity
represented among organizations and the number of professionals who attended.
"I was intrigued by the idea that so many groups were
represented," Barnwell commented. "It was very well done."
The groups will be holding another joint network event in
December. Be sure to check the AWCNJ website for details this fall.

you will see the final version before publication. Possible topics: Your most
effective work habits. Someone who inspired you. Mentoring. Balancing work and
