"The very construction of a book means that something hides inside, and her art form has become a kind of distillation of what's unseen, a means of its emergence.  Searching used-book sales and staying alert for abandoned books, she waits for inspiration before sculpting.  Typically, she chooses them based on the texture of the pages or the cover, or some other physical aspect.  Then she reads them, alternately delving and skimming, and her ideas begin to germinate.  She likes the process of 'revealing what's underneath', and her process is organic and intimate.  Turning only a few pages at a time, she decides what to bring forth by choosing what to slice away.  With surgical precision, she may cut away entire sections, carve patterns, or may outline an inside illustration or photograph.  Only as the pages turn does she decide.  'What comes next is a mystery', she says, 'and that's part of the joy' ".
