This year's American Craft Week celebration, to be held October 7-16, will bring together individuals, small businesses and organizations from all fifty states in recognition of the countless ways handmade objects enrich our daily lives and contribute to our national aesthetic and economy.
We at Handscapes Gallery celebrate American Crafts every day. Many thanks to all of the wonderful artists and craftspeople who share their talents with us. We also would like to thank all of you out there who appreciate and celebrate American Crafts by making them a part of your lives. |
NC Jewelry
Last year, to celebrate American Craft Week, we focused on the rich pottery heritage of North Carolina.
North Carolina is also home to craftspeople working in many areas besides pottery. This year, we would like to introduce you to some of the wonderful jewelry artists across our state.

Me2U Glass
Kathy Hudson is a late bloomer. Like many others, she was taught to pursue work that would "pay the rent" rather than work that would fulfill her soul. Then she was introduced to the concept of "doing what you love and loving what you do". It struck a chord within and she began a quest to find and follow her bliss.
As fate would have it, Kathy found herself, at age 40, unemployed in a very competitive job market. It was in this time period that she found her heart's passion in kiln-fired glass.

Now, working in her studio overlooking beautiful Lake Travis in Austin, TX, Kathy is constantly challenged and delighted by creating fused glass pieces based on good design, eye-catching color combinations and patterns, with an eye toward functionality and affordability. Her work is sold in galleries from Alaska to the Virgin Islands.

Kathy credits much of the success of her business to her husband and soul-mate Bill, who enables and encourages her to follow her dreams.

K Robins Designs
"Expression through art and craft has been a lifelong companion for me. The images and themes of these designs tell a personal, yet universal story.
The work with symbols began about 30 years ago at a time of extreme upheaval. I changed from making art that was functional to art that was very personal and symbolic. The new work, with symbols and figurative images, gave me comfort, strength and insight. As my life continued to challenge me, symbolic art became a path or practice.

When I design I am looking for the simplest, most direct lines I can find to express my emotion. It is similar to tuning a musical instrument. When the instrument is in tune, it has a magical quality not there when it is not in tune. So it is with working with symbols. So when I get it just right, I say 'it sings'.

Family, deep friendships and an array of teachers have been a steady source of inspiration. Their outpouring of talent, courage, and wisdom has profoundly affected my work. Some pieces, such as Aphrodite, Shakti and Changer are visionary, that is, I see them in my mind first. They work as affirmations or visualizations. Others, like Raven, Cerridwen and Vrksasana are attempts to capture qualities that amaze me in people I know and love. Many of the jewelry designs come from my fascination with the language of symbols and how the art of different cultures and times echoes around the world.
