Satomi by Kristina Kada

Kristina Kada's handcrafted jewelry is inspired by the balance of energy and precision. The vigor of life meets the detail of art in her scatter of organic shapes over architectural forms
Honoring the centuries-old Japanese tradition of kumihimo, Kristina weaves hand-dyed silk thread into fine cord, pairing color with her modern designs in sterling silver and 22k gold. Her classic techniques employ steel stakes, saw piercing and a hydraulic press to meld freehand elements with original castings.

Meg Forward
I am a native of San Diego, CA,
where I grew up surrounded by
creative artists. My mother, who made copper enameled jewelry, sent me at age six to my first art class with Belle Baranceanu. Under her instruction I developed a simplified, graphic approach when
models -- animals at the San Diego Zoo. I was fascinated with birds, choosing to draw pink flamingos and a cockatoo named King Tut.
Later, my bird fascination led to a bachelor's degree in Zoology from the University of
California. Understanding bird behavior enhanced my interest in drawing birds. When I moved from the west coast with my husband and settled in Beaufort, North Carolina, I began to use my art skills, working as a graphic artist and a scientific illustrator. This entailed preparing drawings for publication for researchers at Duke, UNC, NC Fisheries Lab, and ECU.

At this time I also began to paint canvases in acrylics, incorporating local species of shorebirds as my subject matter. The presence of two young children, however, made it increasingly difficult for me to paint. So I developed a generic family of birds called "Peeple," and I used them in designs on wooden jewelry. Eventually, these designs spread onto wooden boxes and dried gourds, all of which are available now at Handscapes Gallery.
