Hambone

Hambone

Hambone is the newest addition to the Handscapes pack.  Kate adopted him from our local county animal shelter at the end of April.  He is a yellow labrador reriever (perhaps with some hound mixed in for good measure).  Hammie is a sweet, clumsy puppy who has never met a stranger.  He loves to play and nap, but his favoirite pastime is carrying his own leash in his mouth while he goes on walks.

North Carolina native Rachel Croom found herself in the sailing community of Beaufort, NC after a job transfer.  Two years later she quit her job and went sailing.  She sailed professionally for twelve years, picking up a Captain's license along the way.  In 1996, Rachel returned to Beaufort.

Rachel has always been drawn to the arts.  As a child she enjoyed watercolor and oils.  During her sailing days she worked in pen and ink.  About eight years ago she discovered jewelry making.  She began by making beaded jewelry, ventured into Art Clay in 2004, then changed to Precious Metal Clay and was certified in PMC by Cece Wire in January, 2005. Rachel is a member of the Carteret County Arts and Crafts Coalition and participates in their annual shows.

"I travel whenever possible, picking up ideas from architecture, nature, and different cultures.  After visiting Bali and China, my designs became more influenced by the Orient.  I work with both silver and bronze clay, and have just purchased copper clay to try. PMC is the most creative outlet for me.  It's really relaxing to me to pick up a piece of clay, roll it out and design something that turns out to be a piece of Wearable Art."

Bandana Yardbirds

"Dad and I created the first Yardbird in August of 1991 in Jamestown, Kentucky. Dad has spent most of his career making things from metal. The first bird came about from our talking about and tinkering with scrap materials. People instantly loved them!

Today, Yardbirds are handcrafted in Louisville, Kentucky by me. Our menagerie of birds, critters, dogs and cats has grown from one to over hundreds. I promise to always maintain a tradition of consistently creating exciting new designs.

When people ask me about my creations, I smile and say, "The things in life that bring us the most joy are those which are fun and unexpected, not the mere necessities." I believe we can all benefit from a little more whimsy in our lives!"
