Enameling
Understanding the Technique

Vitreous enameling is the fusing of powdered glass to metal at a high (usually 1380-1560F) temperature.

The process has a long history in art, having been used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Celts, Romans, Byzantines, and Chinese.

In more recent times, enameling was a popular technique with artists such as Faberge and several artists of the Art Nouveau period.

There are a wide variety of enameling techniques.  Some of the better known processes include Basse Taille (a pattern is created in the metal backing, and enamel is applied on top), Champleve (enamel is inlaid into depressions in the metal, leaving metal exposed), and Limoges (painting with enamel).

Many jewelers today, like Janet Harriman, work in Cloisonne enamel.
This technique consists of soldering or fusing a network of fine silver lines on the metal backing, creating "cells".  The enamel is laid into these cells, fired, then ground smooth.  More enamel is applied, fired and ground.  This process continues until the depth of color and detail are achieved.  Janet is a master of this technique, which she often combines with gold foil to increase the depth and luminosity of a piece of jewelry.

Pyrates on Parade
July 4 in Beaufort

Capt. Sinbad

Beaufort celebrates its long Pirate history with the Beaufort Pyrate invasion on Aug. 8 & 9.

The theme of this year's July 4 Parade was "Pyrates on Parade", so the streets were full of pirates of all ages in their best (or worst) pirate clothes.

Come join us in August for plenty of Pyrates!

Furry Friends
Suki

Suki

Meet Suki, Jill's furry friend.  Visitors to Handscapes Gallery are used to seeing Jill's friendly face behind the counter.  Jill's husband Ed often brings Suki by for a visit.  She officially works as a greeter at Beaufort Yacht Sales, but she also has an appreciation for the fine arts.

Greetings!

Janet Harriman Jewelry
Classically unique

Janet HarrimanBeaufort's own Janet Harriman is a multi- talented jeweler who has been making jewelry for well over 30 years.  Throughout her career she has employed many jewelry techniques such as fabrication, stone setting, and enameling.  Her designs range from simple, classic pearl hoop earrings to stunning cloisonne enamels.

Janet Harriman cloisonne

In the last few years, Janet has begun working in Precious Metal Clay.  This substance consists of fine silver particles imbedded in a clay matrix, allowing the artist great freedom of design.  When fired, the clay burns away, leaving a fine silver piece of jewelry (fine silver is pure silver, unalloyed with any other metal).  Often, Janet combines the finished PMC pieces with other processes.  Recently, she has begun enameling on the PMC, creating truly unique works of art.

Janet studied art at Moore College of Art in Philadephia and at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA.  While in Oakland she completed an apprenticeship with Steve Abruzzu.  Additionally she has studied at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina.  She has won numerous awards and has been featured in the Premier Edition of the PMC Guild Annual.  She has been chosen to demonstrate "Collage and Enameling for PMC" at the Tech Expo PMC Annual Conference at Purdue University in July.

A cerified PMC instructor, Janet teaches several workshops a year, sharing her knowledge of fabrication, PMC and enameling with her students.  She demonstrates her jewelry making techniques several times a year at Handscapes Gallery.

Janet and her husband, Rick Doble, live in Smyrna, NC, a small community just outside of Beaufort, NC.

Newman Ceramics
Beautiful Porcelain

Alan & Brenda NewmanAlan and Brenda Newman create stunning porcelain pottery which is both functional and sculptural.  The pottery has a distinctly organic feel to it and is at the same time refined and elegant.  Their flowing matte microcrystalline glazes make each piece beautifully unique.

Newman Balloon Goblets

Alan and Brenda have been fulltime studio potters since 1978.  Each exquisite piece is handcrafted in their home studio, using their own clay and glaze formulas.  The forms are slipcast, then altered, detailed, glazed and fired to cone 6.  All aspects of the work, including all original pieces, molds, castings and glazing are done by Alan and Brenda.

Newman Fallen Petal Bowl

Alan began working in clay in 1968. He studied with Carl Paak & William Daley at the University of New Mexico, receiving his MA in 1973. Brenda also graduated from UNM. She is self taught in clay.

The Newmans have been the recipient of many awards for their beautiful pottery, and their work has appeared in several publication.  They reside in Salem, Oregon.  To see more of their work, click on the link below.

Alan and Brenda Newman
I feel strongly that the visual arts are of vast importance.  Of course, I could be prejudiced.  I am a visual art.
